How often do you see a boxing match turn into a team brawl? George Kambosos Jr. can guarantee that an event like this is just as rare as it is exciting. In a triumphant return to the ring on Sunday (AEST), George Kambosos, the former world champion, clinched a majority decision victory over Maxi Hughes.

George Kambosos Jr. stepped into the professional boxing arena at the youthful age of 19 on May 18, 2013. He marked the beginning of his journey with a convincing 2nd round TKO triumph over Jayson Mac Gura. Since that debut, Kambosos Jr. has compiled a commendable record of 20 wins and 2 losses, with 10 knockout victories. Never in his career of 10 years had Kambosos encountered anything like this. Why has Kambosos crossed out the Sydney Opera House as a venue for any of his future matches?

Boxing Kingdom posted a clip of the infamous Temelkov-Salisbury bout. In the annals of boxing history, certain fights become memorable for their spectacular knockouts or intense back-and-forth battles. Regrettably, for Alex Temelkov and Ken Salisbury, the 1982 clash for the Australian Light Middleweight title is etched in memory not for its in-ring action but for an unexpected turn of events.

Instead of a clean resolution, the bout descended into chaos, transforming into an all-out brawl. Shockingly, the chaos extended beyond the two fighters, ensnaring numerous others in the fracas, including the referee, Charkey Ramon—a former fighter himself. Kambosos had been present while the incident happened.

What is next for George Kambosos Jr.?

A controversial victory over Maxi Hughes put him back in the spotlight after a boxing hiatus. Promoter Lou DiBella revealed that Kambosos is set to face Vasiliy Lomachenko in early spring 2024, marking a significant challenge for the Australian. Lomachenko, who recently faced a competitive loss against Haney, remains a formidable opponent at 35.

DiBella acknowledged the difficulty of beating the Ukrainian, emphasizing that Kambosos needs to bring his A-game to stand a chance. The looming showdown carries the weight of uncertainty, as Kambosos’s performance will be a decisive factor in determining his fate against the seasoned Lomachenko.

While events such as these have some questioning the respect and discipline boxing holds, others find it hilarious. George Kambosos Jr. while having a good laugh off of it has also taken notes about what not to do to avoid such a possibility. What do you think of the infamous incident?
