To many fans, it’s one of those fights that carries the telltale signs of an epic clash written all over it. After all, it involves two of the best boxers of the modern era. One is already at the pinnacle of boxing heights, a pound-for-pound genius, and one of the only two current undisputed champions among men.
The other, though relatively younger, has been marking his stamp with his monstrous capacity to devour foes. If it comes to fruition, then the Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez fight would go down as one of the most impactful bouts of recent times. ‘The Mexican Monster’ on his part has been chasing the fight for quite some time. He even got himself aligned systemically, becoming the undisputed champion’s challenger. However, not all are convinced. As Benavidez inches closer to the much-coveted match, some believe he is not ready to face the music.

The Unhackable ‘Cinnamon’ Puzzle
In his last bout, David Benavidez forced former middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade into retirement. After defeating Caleb Plant in March last year, it was the second consecutive win for ‘The Mexican Monster’. Thus, many found themselves convinced that he could take on Canelo Alvarez.
But not Abel Sanchez. The Mexican trainer had been known for a long time for his association with former world champion Gennady Golovkin. Fight Hub TV‘s Marcos Villegas caught up with the 2015 Futch-Condon best trainer of the year award recipient to get his understanding of the fight and where both boxers stood. The Fight Hub TV founder shared details of a poll with followers to vote for the winner in the Alvarez-Benavidez bout.
“So we ran a poll on uh our Channel about 49,000 votes so far, and we asked people if you had to bet $100 on who will win between Canelo and Benavidez,” said Villegas. When the outcome came, it turned out that nearly 65% sided with Alvarez, while the remaining 35% picked Benavidez. “What do you think about that Abel? Do you think Canelo is still the favorite?” asked Villegas. Nodding his head, the celebrated trainer couldn’t have agreed more.
In no uncertain terms, he said, “I think that’s how that’s how I see it. Still, one fight is not one fight’s not gonna make you one fight is just because you won a lot of fights doesn’t mean that you’re going to be able to compete against the best in the world.” So, in Sanchez’s opinion, David Benavidez did what was expected of him. However, his opponent was a 35-year-old-man and had been out of the ring for over a year. Then he cited an example.
Canelo Alvarez Way Ahead
Last year, Terence Crawford fought an outstanding fighter, a unified champion, to achieve his crowning glory. However, if he needs to sustain his greatness, he has no choice but to fight another big name. Likewise, Canelo Alvarez has literally fought almost every boxer pitted against him, and most of them were in their prime. “Now we’re talking where the guy that you’re talking about, Canelo; he’s done it against everybody they put in front of him, right, and his, and it’s been guys in their prime; it hasn’t been guys that were old,” he said.

Marcos Villegas asked for his reason for backing Alvarez. After all, Benavidez comes out as a much bigger and stronger fighter. Thus, it would be a whole lot easier for him to finish off the undisputed champion. Abel Sanchez then cited Dmitry Bivol‘s example. Despite being the bigger guy, even he couldn’t force an early stoppage against the Mexican icon. However, the award-winning trainer said that if David Benavidez accomplishes a similar feat as the one against Andrade, then he might change his views.
