De La Hoya said, “I really do think it’s the perfect opportunity. It literally is. When I was watching John Ryder and Munguia, you know, right there, up close and personal, you know, you have Freddy in the corner, for the first time I saw a different Munguia from previous, you know, outings, where he was on his toes more. He was using his jab more. He was patient. Still the relentless Munguia we see and we know.” Furthermore, he said, “But I saw something different, which is great because now Freddie Roach, I mean they went straight back to the gym after the fight.

The Golden Boy believes that despite the criticism from many that Jaime Munguia is not ready for Canelo, De La Hoya believes he is. “We couldn’t wait any longer, you know. There’s fans who are saying, ‘Well Munguia is already- he’s almost 50 and 0 and hasn’t, you know, when is he going to step up?’ Well, this is it. Here you go, you know. And there’s a lot of fans, ‘Well he’s not ready’. Look, we know when he’s ready, we know when he’s not. That’s our job. He is ready. He is positioned right now. This is his moment. This can be the changing of the guard on Cinco de Mayo,” claimed Oscar De La Hoya.

However, the last Mexican boxer who fought Canelo Alvarez was a bit skeptical about Jaime Munguia’s recent triumph, even though he wished the best for the boxer.

Jaime Munguía surprised a lot of people since many expected Alvarez’s next bout to be against David Benavidez. But, this fight is still not being as panned as Canelo’s last fight against Jermell Charlo. Many like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., despite reservations, think Jaime Munguía has a shot. Chavez Jr. also expressed his heartfelt desire for the young boxer to win, even though he thinks the time isn’t right.

He said, “I like Munguia the most, and it’s going to be difficult for him to win. That’s why Canelo grabbed him. But I hope to God he wins. It’s good for boxing and it’s good for everyone. He’s very humble, he’s a good boxer. If he had fought one more fight, I would put my money on Munguia, but with Freddie Roach in the corner there is always a chance.
