After Canelo Alvarez verbally abused and accused Oscar De La Hoya of stealing money from his boxers, the latter’s attorney sent Canelo Alvarez a cease-and-desist letter, branding Alvarez’s allegations “false and preposterous”. Yesterday, ESPN received a copy of the mentioned letter and Mike Coppinger discussed it in an article. Today, De La Hoya finally released the letter titled “Defamation of Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions.”

So, at the final press conference of Jaime Munguia vs. Canelo Alvarez, things really heated up when demanding respect, ‘The Golden Boy’ claimed his Promotions built Canelo Alvarez. ‘Cinnamon’ was livid at this and so he called the former an “a**hole,” “p***y,” and “motherf****r” among the expletives. Sounds ugly, right?

Additionally, Saul declared that he was already an established boxer when he arrived in the US which led De La Hoya to only profit from the boxer’s name. As a result, De La Hoya’s attorney, meditating on the legal implications of Saul’s allegations, citing California Civil Code 46(1) and 46(3), held Canelo Alvarez accountable for libel and slander.

“It’s defamatory per se to accuse someone of a crime. Cal. Civ. Code 46(1). It’s also defamatory per se to make false statements specifically designed to injure someone’s business. Cal. Civ. Code 46(3),” read the letter.

It does not end here! Claiming Canelo’s remarks were “made with actual malice,” the letter announced the Mexican boxer received every penny promised and deserved. But, Alvarez’s attorney Gregory Smith felt otherwise and, as expected, defended his client while replying to the letter issued by De La Hoya.

All that glitters ain’t always gold

Not only did the cease-and-desist letter by Oscar De La Hoya highlight the legal implications of Canelo Alvarez’s allegations, but it also belittled Alvarez’s achievements after he quit GBP in 2020. “Although Canelo may be plateaued that his career since he left Golden Boy, that disappointment does not justify making such outrageous allegations,” read one sentence. At this, although they demanded Canelo retract his allegations, Alvarez’s attorney Gregory Smith supported Saul while speaking to ESPN.

As fans know, in 2020, Canelo Alvarez filed a lawsuit against Oscar De La Hoya and GBP citing a breach of the agreement. Smith, defending Canelo pointed out that when the boxer audited GBP’s payment and deductions, he realized they owed him money. In this context, referring to court records, Smith brought to light another shocker. Apparently, Gennady Golovkin was underpaid by De La Hoya’s promotion which led ‘GGG’ to sue GBP.
