We might be seeing the last of Gervonta Davis in 2025. The American fighter has expressed his desire to hang up his boxing gloves, and the boxing world has plunged into shock and sadness since then. However, they continue to overlook the man he is fighting next, Lamont Roach. But how will the fight unfold for the challenger? Does he have a chance?

Davis, 30, will take on Roach, 29, on March 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the WBA lightweight crown, despite floating rumors of a cancelation. To the unfamiliar, the challenger has received special permission from the WBA to move up a division and challenge for the WBA title at 140, as he held the super featherweight title of the same sanctioning body. But as Roach, 25-1-1, is moving up to a new weight class, that too against a dominant fighter, fans have low expectations from him. But Oscar De La Hoya thinks otherwise.

In a conversation with Fight Hub TV, De La Hoya, 51, discussed the fight and the challenger’s fate. He believed a tough fight in the office was in store for him. He said, “I think Lamont Roach is a terrific fighter, he might be a little over his head with Gervonta Davis. Gervonta Davis is, I mean, to say the least. He’s a beast. He really is.”

De La Hoya continued, “He’s [Gervonta Davis] a tremendous fighter. He’s a dedicated fighter when it comes to training and fighting and making sure that he’s in optimal conditions when he steps inside that squared circle. It’s gonna be a tough night for Roach, but you can never count him out.”

But how does ‘The Reaper’ fare against a hard-hitting knockout machine in Davis? What are the skill sets he has that could help him turn the fight’s tide? The Golden Boy Promotions lynchpin explained it, too.

Oscar De La Hoya weighs Lamont Roach and Gervonta Davis’ strengths

The American promoter pointed out that Roach was slippery. It could result in him catching you off-guard at any moment in the fight. In addition, the Washington, DC native’s combinations could prove to be deadly, as you can’t see them coming. Whereas Davis, at 30-0, edges him out in experience. Not to mention ‘Tank’ has devastating knockout power.

De La Hoya added, “You know, watching him fight up close and personal, he’s sneaky good, which means he can catch you at any time. He can land combinations sometimes at will without you even knowing it. You know, he’s that sneaky. So that’s going to be very interesting. But you know, obviously, Gervonta Davis has the experience. He has the knowledge. He has that mean streak in him that will take you out with any punch you.”

Fans are eagerly awaiting the fight, but there are clouds of uncertainty over the fight. Davis had declared on his social media handles that the fight was canceled. Meanwhile, the Roach camp remained adamant about the fight happening. The PBC’s lack of clarification has only tangled up the situation. It remains to be seen whether the fans will be able to witness the fight or not.
