That Jaime Munguia would stop John Ryder was not entirely unexpected. But, since Ryder survived 12 3-minute rounds against Canelo Alvarez and lost only one match via TKO in the past, little did boxing fans expect Munguia would knock John out. As a result, Oscar De La Hoya was impressed with Jaime’s performance in the ring. Likewise, he said, “Jaime Munguia, I believe did what nobody else could do. Knock out John Ryder in a spectacular performance, I have to say.”

I talked to Freddie Roach right after the fight in the ring and he looked at me and smiled. And he said, ‘This is just the beginning. You wait and see.’ So, I’m excited for Jaime’s future. I’m excited that he made a statement,” De La Hoya continued. Along these lines, he added there was now a possibility of Munguia facing Canelo in the ring. “That’s the fight to make. September is the fight to make with Canelo Alvarez. And all of you can hopefully push that. That’s the fight in all Mexican showdown. Imagine that!” he said.

I feel combat sport is a representation of life inside a cage or ring. There is fear, struggle, and the will to be free. It has a poetic quality.
