In a reported incident on December 6, 2018, in his hometown of Providence, Demetrius Andrade found himself in legal trouble. According to the Providence Journal, police alleged that the 30-year-old world champion was discovered with a Glock 19 concealed in a Louis bag while driving his Mercedes, notably lacking the required permit for the firearm.

Police encountered Andrade at 2:30 a.m. when he was obstructing traffic while engaged in conversation with a friend. Noticing his visible nervousness and furtive glances towards his bag, the police discovered the handgun along with a magazine containing ten bullets. Andrade purportedly justified his possession of the weapon by citing the need for protection due to his fame and financial status.

According to an ESPN report, a spokesperson for Andrade clarified that the fighter, residing in New Hampshire, possessed a valid license to carry the gun in that state and had unintentionally forgotten about the weapon in his backpack while visiting his hometown. Providence Police Detective Maj. David Lapatin asserted to the newspaper, “There’s no excuse for carrying a gun without a permit.”

Consequently, Andrade faced a felony charge of possessing a firearm without a license but was subsequently released on bail. Following his arrest on December 6, Andrade initially faced arraignment in District Court, where he couldn’t enter a plea for the felony charge until the case progressed to Superior Court, a transition documented in court records occurring in April.
