“Rest In Power”: With Tears In His Eyes, Jamie Foxx Mourns the Saddening Demise of His Idol and Boxing’s ‘Apollo Creed’, Carl Weathers

Blood dripping from his face, Apollo Creed told Rocky in ‘Rocky IV’, “Don’t stop this fight. No matter what.” As he got beaten to a pulp by Drago, Rocky stood there with the towel in his hand and kept his promise. It led to Creed’s death in the film series. The heart-wrenching scene still reminds fans of how Creed wanted one final chance to relive his days of glory.

It was Carl Weathers who played Apollo Creed to perfection. The actor passed away at the age of 76. He was a big inspiration for boxers and Hollywood action stars like Jamie Foxx. Foxx took to Instagram to remember the man that he looked up to.

The ‘Django Unchained’ actor took to Instagram to share his thoughts. “Rest in power to a man that inspired me to do what I do… Every time I watched Rocky I always rooted for Apollo Creed… hearing of his passing, brought real tears to my eyes… God has just gained another angel #swipeleft look through these photos and see a man who curated an incredible career,” he wrote.

Weathers’ family released a statement regarding his death. The statement read, “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers. He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024. … Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner and friend.”

The actor is survived by his two sons, Jason and Matthew, whom he had with ex-wife Mary Ann Castle. The cause of death was not revealed.

Weathers had a successful Hollywood career. He appeared in ‘Predator’, ‘The Mandalorian’, ‘Happy Gilmore’, ‘Action Jackson’, ‘Arrested Development’ and several other projects. However, the ‘Rocky’ film series was what he was known for.

Born on January 14, 1948, in New Orleans, he was an NFL player for the Oakland Raiders in 1970-71. Soon he began his Hollywood career and ‘Rocky’ happened in 1976. The rest is history.

Sylvester Stallone, the man behind ‘Rocky Balboa’ fondly remembered his long-time friend and co-star, Carl Weathers. Stallone paid heartfelt tributes, acknowledging Weathers as an integral part of his life and success. Weathers’ pivotal role in the series, from their legendary on-screen clash in the first edition to the tragic demise in the fourth film had the audience hooked to the franchise.

Stallone stood before an oil painting depicting the iconic duel between ‘Apollo Creed’ and ‘Rocky Balboa’. Reflecting on their first encounter, Stallone recalled sensing Weathers’ greatness. He admitted he couldn’t have achieved the success of ‘Rocky’ without Weathers’ support. “We lost a legend yesterday. My life was forever changed for the better the day I met Carl Weathers. Rest in power,” he said.
