Once again, the specter of old skeletons emerges. It knocks at the door as the tension builds for the upcoming battle between Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia. A video containing old Munguia fights has been fast gaining traction. Purportedly, it brings into question a feature for which the Tijuana-born former light middleweight champion has received flak in the past. It didn’t take much time for concerned netizens to voice their thoughts and opinions.

Jaime Munguia remains unbeaten, with nearly 80% of his wins secured through early stoppages. But Canelo Alvarez would be the most formidable opponent he might have come across in his career. He has no other alternative but to go full throttle. However, the sudden appearance of fight footage of the 27-year-old boxer might lead to doubts among a few fans and followers, it seems.

The latest flurry kicked off when a user shared nearly minute-long footage containing clips of key fights Jaime Munguia participated in during the last few years. Perhaps the idea was to showcase instances where Munguia’s opponents almost took him out with punches in the face. The message, alongside a few grimacing emoticons, read, “Jaime Munguia’s Defense.” Or rather, the lack of it.

For, as the clip after the clip showed, the young Mexican boxer often left his face open. It resulted in the adversary lodging a flurry of punches. Thankfully, Munguia is gifted with a strong chin; hence, he could withstand the onslaughts thus far. But would he be so lucky while facing Canelo Alvarez?

Some of the respondents could foresee that it would be an easy night’s work for Alvarez. Amidst a few appreciations for his granite chin, a few even took up the cudgels to highlight how he has changed.

Vintage Bites for Jaime Munguia

Taking a dig at the former light middleweight champion, this user stated that he has been using his face to stop punches. In three rounds or less, Canelo Alvarez would knock him down.

The next user espoused a similar sentiment, saying the world champion knows precisely why he picked Munguia for the May 4 fight.

One of the followers, though, tried defending Jaime Munguia. They wanted everyone to check out the John Ryder fight. According to them, Munguia outclassed Alvarez while knocking out the British challenger.

Then a few users lauded Munguia for his chin and strength as well. For instance, this user pointed out how using his face to absorb punches became the most effective defensive technique for the former light middleweight champion.

Sharing similar views, this user pointed out how Jaime Munguia, despite lacking footwork or head-moving skills, always fights with a lot of courage. He is blessed with a strong chin.

Finally, perhaps disagreeing with the entire attempt, this follower stated that it’s irrelevant to show clips when Munguia was much younger, a novice. He has come a long way from those days.

It must be mentioned that, unlike what some of the users mentioned, the clip included fights that took place quite recently. Such as the title fight against Sergiy Derevyanchenko. Munguia and the Ukrainian boxer fought on June 10 last year. Incidentally, snippets from it formed the lion’s share of the footage.

Before the John Ryder fight, however, Jaime Munguia hired the services of legendary trainer Freddie Roach. The changes were evident in the way the young Mexican boxer tore down John Ryder, round after round. Hence, under the new circumstances, it would be too early to write off Munguia as a walkover for Canelo Alvarez. The improved footwork and defense combined with a naturally gifted, strong chin make for a lethal combination that the undisputed might find hard to crack.
