Romero grew up in Las Vegas and claims to have often heard gunshots in his neighborhood while he lived there. “I was raised in downtown Las Vegas, which has always been a bad area. Growing up, there was a lot of violence,” once told Romero.

At the young age of nine, he started learning martial arts. Along with his sister, Romero first began with Judo. However, he moved toward boxing as soon as he turned sixteen years old. Romero’s inspiration came from his father and the former first trained himself under the guidance of coach Johnny Tocco.
