At the young age of nine, he started learning martial arts. Along with his sister, Romero first began with Judo. However, he moved toward boxing as soon as he turned sixteen years old. Romero’s inspiration came from his father and the former first trained himself under the guidance of coach Johnny Tocco.

Rolando Romero, who formerly held the WBA interim lightweight title, was born and raised in America. However, Romero’s father hails from Cuba. Romero’s father was a popular boxer who won the national championship three times. Romero, along with his family, believes in Christianity.
