Roy Jones Jr. comes as a well-wisher in the life of Gervonta Davis. Especially at a time, when he hasn’t been able to finalize a bout since April 2023. Notably, Davis isn’t confined by weight classes. Despite reigning at 135 pounds, rumors whisper of a possible return to 130. Within the lightweight division, a smorgasbord of talent awaits.

Shakur Stevenson‘s southpaw style beckons, while the legendary Vasyl Lomachenko offers a clash of generations. Super lightweights like Devin Haney and Teofimo Lopez present their own hurdles: Haney’s lightning jab and Lopez Jr.’s brute force could push Davis to new heights. Amidst all these options, the former 4-division world champion advised Davis to sign a contract immediately.

Roy Jones Jr. very well understands that the demand for a ‘Tank’ fight is quite high in the market. For a boxer like Davis, it doesn’t matter who his opponent is, he’ll always triumph in the PPV numbers, no matter what. Jones Jr. termes it, “He’s a must-see TV.” But at the same time, he also believes that he shouldn’t be waiting on important fights for too long, as it’d get troublesome for him in the future.

So, Jones Jr. stated, “Yeah you want to see him fight Shakur, yeah you want to see him fight the Haney’s. Haney is probably outgoing, Shakur ain’t gonna be far behind that because he’s short, they’re not.” Furthermore, he continued, “So if they’re gonna fight one of them, we better hurry up and do it now because the longer he waits, the more it weighs in their favor because they’re both gonna get bigger than him.

So, Davis needs to get a fight for himself, and if not, Jones Jr. said, “So maybe you see him go back and fight somebody we want to see him fight a long time ago. We used to want to see him fight Loma. They stood at 135. Why not go back and fight Loma now?” So, Davis shouldn’t wait anymore to finalize a fight for himself. And as of now, Davis is showing interest in squaring up against Conor Benn.

My passion for sweet science began at the tender age of 12, a gift from my father who introduced me to the legendary persona of Muhammad Ali. In my heart, 'The Rumble in the Jungle' still remains to be the pinnacle of sporting history. Over the years, my fervor for boxing remained intact, although life's commitments sometimes deviated me from being a hardcore fan of the sport.
