The Ryan Garcia saga, even though neck-deep in a big controversy, seems pretty engaged in developing a subplot. Fans and followers saw the former interim lightweight champion and Errol Spence Jr. in a back-and-forth. The young boxer didn’t pull any punches. He reached out to the former unified welterweight champion’s girlfriend. But that didn’t signal the end. He even broached the outstanding payments that Spence Jr. reportedly owes to his former trainer, Derrick James, who now tutors Garcia. The exchange seems to be gaining considerable traction on social media.

It’s not that he’s going after the ‘Big Fish’ now. Soon after he defeated Devin Haney, Garcia checked with fans to see if a line-up with Spence Jr. would be exciting enough or not. Despite a controversy-laden lead-up that saw him miss the weights, ‘KingRy’ proved everyone wrong and delivered a statement upset. However, the aftermath of the story saw him embroiled in one of the most embarrassing scandals that might have afflicted boxing of late.

Ryan Garcia didn’t appear to be holding back. Threatening to win over Spence Jr.’s girlfriend, he called out the former welterweight champion for settling the amount he reportedly owes to Derrick James. “F*ck you before I steal your girl, b**ch. Pay back Derrick h*e. That’s how I’m coming, b**ch,” said ‘KingRy’. Now, what caused this sudden flare-up?

As it usually happens, the verbal spat seemingly commenced with an innocuous fan-pick video. A fan shared a clip on X/Twitter that Errol Spence Jr. shared through his Instagram story earlier. It shows the former unified welterweight champion during a running session. “The Big Fish @ErrolSpenceJr just posted on IG 2nd Day Back. We with you, Champ. Let’s go #ManDown.”

Soon, a follower expressed curiosity to know who could be Spence Jr.’s next opponent. Soon a reply came: “Ryan Garcia would be lit bro couldn’t beat Spence even on the Ostarine.” It probably didn’t miss the former champion’s sharp eyes. He shot back, “I’ll legit beat his a*s at the (AT&T stadium at 154-160) off the strength of him testing positive, but Ion take tune-ups.” It was over to ‘KingRy’ now.

Calling out the ‘Big Fish’, the young boxer said that he would take up from where ‘Bud’ Crawford left off last year. He would knock the wits out of Spence Jr. and complete the job. Pat came the Long Island-born southpaw’s reply. “Tank didn’t get to finish you Cause you quit like a h*e, like we knew you would do. Go find someone to play with ..” said Errol Spence Jr.

Skirmish in the Works?

Of course, the exchange didn’t end there. In a separate message, Ryan Garcia apparently called up Errol Spence Jr.’s partner: “Errol Spence girl, Wassup baby; I know he ain’t treating you right. I love you.

An array of tweets from Garcia seems to have followed subsequently. In one, he has claimed that he authorized his lawyer to send an offer to Errol, ‘No Cents’. He added further, “LETS GO START THE RUMBLE. I GIVE YOU MY WHOLE WORD THAT THIS IS MY NEXT FIGHT UNLESS HE RUNS.” An update from another tweet: his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, has been informed about his interest in the fight.

The to-and-from between Ryan Garcia and Errol Spence Jr. might continue for some time. But there remains a bigger question. Even if the two sides agree, how will they bring about the fight? Many felt that during the last fight against Crawford, Spence Jr. appeared worn out. Hence, there’s a good chance that he might move up a division to 154 pounds. Even though he is known for taking risks, would Ryan Garcia go to the extent that would see him jump over two divisions? Or, would he ask for a catchweight draw?
