Just a few hours of wait and Ryan Garcia will have competed in his 23rd professional fight against Javier Fortuna. Currently, under ESPN’s divisional ranking (up to 135 pounds) Garcia ranks 6th whereas Fortuna is 10th. One of the most skilled and talented divisions in present-day boxing, the 135lbs lightweight category, comprises one superstar after another – Devin Haney, Vasyl Lomachenko, Teofimo Lopez Jr., and Gervonta Davis.

While a fight with any of the other boxers above mentioned is inevitable given Garcia, post the Fortuna fight, maintains his unbeaten record, and his winning streak, ‘The Flash’ drops a bombshell on the fans.

Reportedly, having made the weight at 140 pounds for his latest bout, the following is what Ryan Garcia said:

“I was thinking the other day, I may never go back to 135 pounds.”

So, Ryan Garcia will not fight the much-longed Gervonta Davis fight?

Tweeted by ESPN Ringside, Garcia seems at comfort at 140 pounds. At this moment, Ryan Garcia’s comment on not returning to 135 pounds sounds imperative and less a statement. However, here is what the implications of his words may be.

After Davis took out Rolando Romero last May, a part of the boxing world contemplated a Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia fight. However, now that Garcia hints at not returning to 135 pounds, for the time being, the fight between Tank and The Flash looks far from coming to fruition.

The consequences of staying at 135 pounds are heavy. If not Tank, Garcia would eventually need to fight Haney, Kambosos Jr., or Lopez. Not to doubt Garcia or anyone’s abilities, but the prospect of maintaining an unshaken and unharmed record against the likes of Haney and Davis is relatively challenging and full of tests.

Challenges at 140 pounds for Garcia

For Garcia, the 140 pounds can be full of bruises, too. The likes of Catterall, Taylor, Ramirez, and Prograis occupy the top four. Combining the numbers of all the four mentioned, we have a record of 99 wins and only 3 losses.
