One move that received much criticism from the fans was his shoulder roll which he only just recently added to his arsenal. Interestingly, it seems that the boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. himself taught him the move. The 25-year-old appeared in an interview on the PBD Podcast where he addressed the controversial move.

Ryan Garcia chose to perform the move despite his trainer’s disagreement
In an interview with Patrick Ben-David, Ryan Garcia discussed his use of the shoulder roll in his fight against Oscar Duarte. Despite warnings from coach Derrick James, who emphasized that Garcia isn’t Mayweather, the young boxer showcased the move. Garcia shared, “I show him the shoulder roll, and he starts laughing. It’s not bad but not great yet.” Moreover, he also revealed that he learned the move from the man himself.

Garcia claimed, “It’s not bad but it’s not great yet, but I have Floyd trained me on doing it. He told me he was going to train me on how to do the shoulder roll”. Acknowledging criticisms, Garcia addressed the uniqueness of a Mexican utilizing the shoulder roll. He quoted Mayweather’s assurance, “He told me that my shoulder roll was good,” dismissing stereotypes about who can perform the technique. Garcia emphasized, “I don’t care, I’m doing it.”

In response to questions about ethnicity and the shoulder roll, Garcia remarked, “The shoulder roll is a beautiful thing. Mayweather is super good at it, and James Tony too.” The interview showcased Garcia’s determination to embrace and excel in a technique associated with legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather. Criticisms aside, Garcia appears to have more faith in Mayweather than his own promoter.
Garcia compares Mayweather with The Golden Boy
Despite Oscar De La Hoya‘s denial of any issues with Golden Boy star Ryan Garcia, recent events suggest a strained relationship between the two. Garcia, known for his outspoken nature, further fueled the speculation on the podcast.

Expressing his frustration, Garcia pointed out, “This is my problem with Oscar. Stop going to the media and bashing Floyd.” He highlighted a perceived shift in De La Hoya’s authenticity, describing him as “goofy” and “crazy.” In contrast, Garcia praised ‘Pretty Boy’ for being “real” and “in your face,” emphasizing the difference in their approaches.
While ‘The Flash’ acknowledged a level of respect for De La Hoya, it was far from a great assessment. He criticized De La Hoya’s career as a fighter, suggesting he “didn’t reach his fullest potential” due to external distractions.
As Ryan Garcia eyes a potential bout with Devin Haney, the question remains whether De La Hoya can mend the strained relationship and secure the desired fight for his talented protégé. Only time will tell if these differences can be reconciled in the pursuit of mutual success.
