Reportedly, Shakur Stevenson will return on July 6 in New Jersey to defend his WBC Lightweight title against Artem Harutyunyan. While Shakur, 26 is 21-0-0, Artem, 33, is 12-1-0 in the sport. However, fans are yet to get over the colorless performance Stevenson developed against Edwin De Los Santos in November last year. As a result, a random boxing fan now accused Stevenson of playing it safe against a tough opponent.

But Shakur was not going to remain silent. Likewise, after the fan challenged Shakur to a fight, the boxer from Newark readily accepted it. Here is what unfolded.

After Mike Coppinger from ESPN revealed that Shakur Stevenson and Artem Harutyunyan were finalizing a deal, several fans were disappointed. As a result, the upcoming fight was even branded a “snooze fest on X. Additionally, when Stevenson faced Edwin De Los Santos in his last fight, the boxer from Newark bored the boxing world with a mundane performance. However, later Bob Arum told the media that Stevenson fought with a “shoulder problem“. On a recent space on X, echoing the same sentiments, a fan told Shakur, “You should not pop it after that last performance. You need to calm the f*** down with that s**t.

To which Shakur Stevenson replied, “Why would I if I know I’m the truth?” But, the fan added, “Because you get on your bike and turn b**** when you get touched.” “Damn, I ain’t turning no b****. I get on my bike and win. You ain’t never been in the boxing ring in a day in your life,” replied Shakur.

In this context, while fans feel like criticizing Shakur for his performance against Santos, Bob Arum believes Shakur Stevenson vs. Artem Harutyunyan will change everyone’s mind.

Bob Arum expects a “scintillating performance” from Shakur against Artem Harutyunyan

After boxing fans heavily criticized Shakur Stevenson for going the distance of twelve rounds, Arum defended the 26-year-old. Besides calling Stevenson a very competitive fighter, the 92-year-old had commended the former’s training methods. “You’re judged by your last fight. But, he’s a young guy and, you know, if in his next performance [against Artem], which I expect will be a scintillating performance, people will forget last night,” Bob Arum had said.

If he was reaching the end of his career, I think people would say, ‘Whoa! Maybe he doesn’t have it anymore,’ that kind of thing. But he’s not. He’s a young guy and, you know, he’s just beginning to reach his potential,” Arum had concluded, showing faith in Shakur.
