The world of boxing never ceases to surprise its enthusiasts. One such surprise was the announcement of Tyson Fury fighting Francis Ngannou on October 28th. The element of surprise here stems from multiple factors, but mostly Fury going against someone who has never boxed before. Touted as the big name in boxing, ‘The Gypsy King’ Fury has claimed that he has not been offered a good fight. However, a lot of boxing stakeholders have disputed his claims.

As everyone awaited more details of a potential Oleksandr Usyk vs. Fury fight, there was disappointing news that shook the boxing scene. The fight collapsed, and then began the blame game. While critics have called out the heavyweight boxer for pulling out of the deal, he, on the other hand, has taken the shield by signing Ngannou. Cameroonian combat fighter Francis ‘The Predator’ Ngannou decided to call it quits with the UFC as his relationship with UFC president Dana White deteriorated. The tension arises from the fact that the company does not allow its fighters to venture outside the sport easily. And now one of the strongest critics of this fight, Eddie Hern, has opened up about it.

In a conversation with iFL TV, promoter Eddie Hearn went off on Tyson Fury for pulling out of the big fight against Usyk. He refuted the claims that Fury was not receiving any good deals to box the big names in heavyweight boxing. He said, “There were plenty of opportunities for Tyson Fury to fight Usyk. I believe in Saudi, and I’m sure they’ll confirm that to you as well. We know Wembley because, apparently, they were dead set on Wembley for 70-30. So Tyson had that offer but couldn’t apparently negotiate Usyk.”

He further took shots at Fury’s promoter, Andy Townsend. Eddie iterated that a promoter’s responsibility is to get their fighters good fights. He said, “Since when do you have to wait for an offer to come in? That never really comes anyway. When you do deal with the Middle East, you don’t just sit on your chair and wait for an offer to come in. You pitch fights to these territories, and you negotiate deals.”

Is boxing all about the money?

It cannot be disputed that the sport of boxing is one of the biggest moneymakers in the world. And it cannot also be denied that a fighter needs to receive their worth monetarily. But it is important to raise the question of priorities when it comes to the sport. Would a fighter be willing to fight someone way below their league? Or in Tyson’s case, someone (Ngannou) very new to the league? Commenting on these important aspects of a deal, Eddie Hearn called out Tyson for only caring about money.

Commenting on the Ngannou fight, Hearn said, “We’ve got to be honest; Tyson Fury cares about one thing only: the money.” In another conversation with the media, Eddie said that he understands the choice Tyson made. Given that it is going to yield him big bucks. He said, “He’s fighting a guy that’s never boxed before, and he’s gonna make 30 million, 40 million. I don’t know how much he’s making, but I would be pushing my fighter to try and make the Undisputed fight probably for double that because I want him to be the undisputed heavyweight world champion, and I think he can win the fight, so I get it, and I don’t blame it, I don’t hate it, and I ain’t mad at you.

A fight between Usyk and Tyson would mean that a unified champion of all titles in the heavyweight class would emerge. But we will not be getting that anytime soon. The fight between Tyson and Francis has rules that have never been heard of before. They will be fighting under the rules of a championship. However, The Gypsy King’s titles will not be on the line. The fight is a big deal for Ngannou as it heralds his arrival in the boxing game. But for Tyson, it is questionable.
