Jake Paul’s story is one that speaks volumes of resilience and a will to go against the grain. The influencer-turned-boxer has redefined how one looks at boxing personalities. He is one amongst those who transgress the normative rules of the sport and emerge through notoriety. Still a scourge of criticism, he first ventured into the pro-boxing league in 2020 against AnEsonGib.

One imagines that a sport is not just about victories and losses on the field, they symbolize a lot more. So was Jake Paul’s story. The fighter in his previous stint as a creator made major bucks. While most applauded him for this venture, a huge chunk did not appreciate his knack for experimenting. But for him it was beyond just experimentation, it was much about saving himself.

Recently, in a conversation with his brother Logan Paul, ‘Problem Child’ spoke about boxing’s role in his life. He said it was that one element in his life that kept him grounded. He said, “Boxing saved my life. It gave me the time to step back and it’s all, I’ve been doing for three years.” Indeed it has been three years since the boxer made his debut in the pro-boxing realm. With a spectacular record of 8 fights with 7 wins, the fighter registered his first loss this year against Tommy Fury.

Wins and losses become the pillar of the boxing realm, but what it deeply holds is the ability to bridge gaps between people and within themselves. A sense of belongingness is what it brings to the fighters. Elaborating on this, the fighter said, “And you can see yourself almost evolving and you have the clearest form of thinking because you’re in this healthy mode and there’s no distractions. It’s just you, and I think that’s why boxing has helped me become this different person. I never thought I would be like how I am today. It started with boxing.”

Paul’s Mental Health Struggles Behind His Fury Loss

In the wake of his scathing loss against Fury this February, Problem Child’s coach gave an explanation for it. Shane Mosley attributed the fighter’s mental health struggles to the loss. Immediately after the matchup, the fighter conceded defeat like a typical boxer does, giving credits where meant. But in the days following it, he took a deviation from his words and claimed that he remained mostly ill throughout his pre-fight training camp.

His coach also added to these reasons for the loss. Sometime earlier, in a conversation on the DAZN Boxing Show, Mosley said, “He can learn and make himself better. I think that fight for one he wasn’t feeling good, two he had some mental things going on in his life that probably shouldn’t happen to a boxer who has been fighting for only three years. All of the stuff on the shoulders, there is a lot of stuff that at play that didn’t make him perform at the one hundred per cent he should have.”

Jake Paul is one of the very few boxers who has taken up two fights this year. Post his loss against Tommy Fury, the fighter rose again in the ring as he went against former MMA fighter, Nate Diaz. Adding another stellar victory through knockout to his record, Paul managed to redeem himself soon from his maiden loss. As days progress, it will be interesting to see who the influencer-turned-boxer will fight next.
