“The First Fight Decided It for Me”: Former World Champion Remains Brutally Honest While Talking About Rematch Between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr

To many, the ninth-round conclusion was enough to settle the long-standing debate between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. However, as it appears, there are a few for whom the verdict remains open. Staying true to his words, Spence Jr., who during the post-fight interview mentioned checking the option, reportedly switched on the rematch clause. It might elate his fans, but the consensus remains contrary in certain quarters. Former champion Paulie Malignaggi confirmed that he had seen enough in the first edition.

It took five years for the fight to finally occur on July 29. As one of the most fundamentally sound boxers in the world, it was expected that, besides his skills, Errol Spence Jr. would be able to capitalize on his strength and size. However, at T-Mobile Arena, Terence Crawford nullified his power and outboxed ‘The Truth,’ leaving him unable to answer. Finally, the referee’s involvement ended the bitter punishment the Nebrasakan heaped on him.

So Michelle Joy Phelps caught up with former Welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi and asked him, “I do want to ask you what your thoughts are on Errol Spence Jr. activating the rematch clause.” Confirming his disinterest, ‘Magic Man’ said, “I really have no interest in the rematch. I don’t know; the first fight decided it for me. I don’t have no cares in the world for the rematch. I don’t want to see it….

So, the former champion doesn’t foresee Spence Jr. bringing anything different. He initially expected him to use his momentum to control a former Lightweight like Crawford. But as it turned out, ‘Bud’ punished the Texas native. The latter failed to adapt himself to changing situations. Forced to retreat, he soon ran out of ideas. Malignaggi said he has no idea what Spence Jr. has up his sleeve regarding setting up a trap and pressing on, qualities he hardly displayed on July 29. On the other hand, Terence Crawford is brilliant, and he causes harm the way he wants, “So I just don’t see anything else happening besides the same result.

Rematch provision overview

Reportedly, if Spence Jr. wanted a rematch, he had to make his decision public within 30 days after the fight. Since ‘Bud’ won the Welterweight fight, he is obliged to award a rematch at the earliest possible date, though he retains the option of setting the weight class at which they could clash. Most fans might remember that Spence Jr. expected the bout to take place at 154 pounds during the post-fight interview.
