After conquering the land down under, Tim Tszyu is on a mission to conquer the land of the free! He will go toe-to-toe with Keith Thurman on March 30 at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. And ahead of his second fight in America, the WBO super welterweight revealed the size of his gloves in an interview today!

‘Onetime’ Thurman last appeared in the ring against Mario Barrios just over a year ago! Before that fight, a controversy regarding the size of the gloves had taken over the boxing world. In that welterweight fight, news came out that one of the boxers had requested 8-ounce gloves instead of 10. When asked, both fighters had pointed at each other for making the request. So, with Thurman’s return to the ring approaching quickly, the reporter from Tha Boxing Voice probed Tszyu about the size of the gloves in the upcoming fight.

In response to the question from the reporter, Tsyzu quickly reminded him that his fight against Thurman was actually happening at 154 pounds or junior middleweight/super welterweight. So, according to the rules, they can’t have 8-ounce gloves. Per boxing rules, fights in flyweight to welterweight can utilize 8-ounce or 10-ounce gloves, but above that, 10-ounce is mandatory.

Hearing this, the reporter realized the mistake on his part, and Tsyzu claimed, “There’s a reason why, in the boxing rules, it goes from 147 from 8 ounces to 154 to 10 ounces. There’s a reason for [it].” Additionally, these rules are put in place because the size and weight of the gloves can affect the impact of punches landed in different weight divisions. The weight of the gloves aside, Thurman seems to have figured out Tszyu.

Keith Thurman claims he will stay sharp for this one

Despite spending much of last year outside the ring, Thurman suggests he has seen a few of Tszyu’s fights and figured him out completely. While appearing in a 7 February interview with Premier Boxing Champions, ‘Onetime’ Thurman broke down Tszyu’s style! “Very fundamentally sound, move forward,” said Thurman.

One take at a time

The first time boxing captured my attention, it was because of a line I heard in the film 'Rocky Balboa', a film surrounding boxing. The line went like this, "But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.
