“They Just Couldn’t Deliver”: Adrien Broner Cuts Ties With BLK Prime Days After Fight Cancellation

One of the nicknames Adrien Broner is bestowed with is ‘The Problem.’ Be it showboating within the ring or out-of-all-proportion gimmicks without, Broner is one the most easily recognized names in boxing today. He won his last title, WBA Super Lightweight, seven years ago on October 3, 2015, against Khabib Allakhverdiev. However, the path turned rugged since the 2017 loss to Mikey Garcia. It followed a draw against Jessie Vargas in 2018 and closed out with a unanimous loss to the mighty Manny Pacquiao, in 2019. It took him nearly two years to stage a comeback.

On February 20, 2021, he fought Puerto Rican Jovanie Santiago at Mohegan Sun Arena in Montville, Connecticut. Despite the controversy involved, Adrien Broner won the bout unanimously. But a two-year hiatus, like the previous instance, followed. So beginning this year, talks on Broner’s comeback fight came about.

Last October, news broke out that Adrien Broner had signed with BLK Prime Boxing. The California-based promotions company grabbed the headline when WBO Welterweight champion Terence Crawford‘s title defense against David Avanesyan reached viewers through BLK Prime PPV. Reportedly, Broner received confirmation on three fights for a period of one year.

However, the thirty-three-year-old former champion, who enjoys a following of over a million on Instagram, took to his social media handle early morning today and said, “Good afternoon y’all, it’s a great Sunday. Uh, I’m just gonna come out and just let everybody know, um, me and BLK Prime have decided to part ways. Um, there’s no bad blood, uh, you know, they just couldn’t deliver, you know….

Then he went on to add how he had given up and called it quits on bad habits such as drinking and clubbing. Now fit as a fiddle, he’s more than eager to fight anyone. “Hit me up, man, hit me up. ‘AB’, a free agent man; let’s do this like I said, man, I’m ready to fight today. Anybody anybody can get it. The man is back,” he concluded.

Adrian Broner’s unlucky run with BLK Prime

Last week ESPN revealed that Adrien Broner’s upcoming match against Michael Williams Jr. on February 25 had been put off. Reportedly Williams Jr. suffered an injury during a sparring session. Lest it’s forgotten, it was the third lineup marched against Broner. BLK Prime had initially planned for him to fight Ivan Redkach. But the face-off failed to materialize due to Redkach having bad blood with his promoters. Soon Hank Lundy‘s name as replacement cropped up but to no avail, as the California State Athletic Commission suspended him.
