In a recent social media post, Oscar De La Hoya expressed his desire to arrange a fight between his boxer, Jaime Munguia, and David Benavidez, the WBC interim super middleweight champion. Munguia, the former WBO junior middleweight champion, wants to face Benavidez, hoping to catch Canelo Alvarez’s attention with a victory. Following his recent performance against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Munguia must be seeing this matchup as a lucrative opportunity, likely attracting many viewers.

He has struggled to secure fights against renowned names like Canelo Alvarez, Jermall Charlo, and Gennady Golovkin, making ‘The Mexican Monster’ the next best option. However, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn may not be pleased, as he had plans for Munguia to face Edgar Berlanga. Furthermore, Hearn has made his desire for the fight clear. He even declared he will talk to the higher-ups of DAZN to make the fight.

The pay-per-view revenue from a Munguia-Benavidez clash could position the winner favorably for a showdown with Canelo Alvarez in May 2024. Fans were left in awe with De La Hoya’s announcement. However, many were also worried about Munguia’s chances against a fighter of Benavidez’s caliber.

Another fan named Sam Corban joked that De La Hoya made this fight just to irk Hearn. He wrote, “You would really sacrifice your golden boy just to spite Eddie”.

Furthermore, Luis Marquez, in his tweet, acknowledged the immense challenge of surpassing the anticipated fight between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford, currently regarded as the fight of the year.

However, Ricardi Martinez voiced their desire for a different matchup. They suggested that Edgar Berlanga versus Munguia would be a more evenly matched fight.

Another fan accused De La Hoya of prioritizing financial gain over the well-being of his fighters. Moreover, he drew a parallel to Gilberto Ramirez who last year suffered a defeat at the hands of Dmitry Bivol. He suggested that Munguia will meet the same fate.

Steve Collins stated, “Benavidez ain’t fighting no one with a pulse until he gets that Canelo pay day now he’s with PBC, that’s obvious.”
