Probably, fate has other plans for 59-year-old Scot England. The Nashville, Tennessee resident, walked into sporting history yesterday. He became the oldest professional welterweight boxer in the world as he entered the ring against Jashawn Hunter at the Texas Troubadour Theatre in his hometown. Only if the outcome too had been in line with what he and other well-wishers had hoped for.
The opponent, England faced, is 37 years his junior. Maybe it was Jashawn Hunter’s day after all. The youngster from North Carolina finally got an opportunity to add some gravitas to his record, which read 6 losses, 5 of which were knockouts. The fight stopped sooner than many would have expected. Ever since its footage has been making the rounds on social media. From the comments that appeared on X/Twitter, it was easy to see that most were vexed by the match.

The sport and person suffer, fans grumble
As it turned out, soon after they started, Hunter, quickly moving inside, launched a right-left-right combination that dreadfully connected with England, sending him down. Though he got up, it was clear that the bout was in Hunter’s control. Some 46 seconds into the round, England’s corner threw in the towel, bringing the fight to an end. One user felt that matches like these pose an issue for the sport of boxing.
This is a problem for the sport.

A winner in real life
Per the available reports, Scot England had received his boxing license from the Tennessee Athletic Commission. He had been undergoing a rigorous training program at a Nashville-based gym. Perhaps participating in a professional boxing match had been his dream. As far as the outcome was concerned, a win for certain would have been an icing on the cake. Nevertheless, even in defeat, he is a winner. How many are able to garner the courage to enter a boxing ring and face an opponent when the only thing that occupies people at that age is retirement? Maybe if everyone could see from Scot England’s point of view.
