With an array of fantastic matchups lined up in front, the boxing world has its hands full. However, away from that hustle and bustle, a somber note calls the community to rally and help one of its own. Some reports have suggested that former world champion Israel Vazquez had been diagnosed with cancer. To pursue the necessary treatment, the three-time super bantamweight champion might be in need of financial assistance.

To raise awareness, his longtime trainer, Freddie Roach, shared an emotional message on Instagram. The Mexico City-born boxer, whose four fights against rival Rafael Marquez, the younger brother of legend Juan Manuel Marquez, thrilled the audience and fans during the 2000s, had already been coping with multiple health issues, including the loss of vision in his right eye. A GoFundMe has been launched for Vazquez. WBC, with whom he had long been associated, also joined the campaign to organize necessary funds.

It’s time we did something for someone who did so much for us

In his heartfelt appeal, Roach says that his former student is onto a new kind of battle. He said, “Dear Israel, we are behind you and sending you lots of thoughts, prayers, and positivity in your fight against cancer.” Emphasizing how he had always been one of his favorite champions, the legendary trainer and Hall of Famer, who manned Manny Pacquiao‘s corner for a long time, stressed that he and the rest of the community were standing alongside Vazquez in this fight.

Then Roach called on all his followers. Sharing a few details about Israel Vazquez, he mentioned the kind of man the former champion was. However, misfortune struck, and now he stares at a fight against cancer. “This journey has been incredibly challenging, not only emotionally but also financially. He has faced each day with courage, showing us all what it means to fight for life with grace and optimism. However, his medical expenses have become overwhelming,” Roach flagged.

Hence, he requested sports lovers to help in any way they could. Even the smallest contribution could make a significant difference for Vazquez. The collective effort to help the former world champion in turn would also remind him how much he is loved and thought of.

Cancer has no respect! Not even for warriors. Israel “Magnífico” Vázquez and his family need our help. A dollar, a prayer, a word of support,” read the message from WBC.

Israel Vazquez: Persevering through Adversity

Israel Vazquez’s outstanding professional career began in 1995. Nearly a decade later, after enduring a few setbacks and winning regional titles, ‘El Magnifico’ finally claimed his first world championship in 2004. A year later, he moved up a division and became the WBC and Ring super bantamweight champion. He lost his championship belts to Rafael Marquez when they dueled for the first time in 2007. However, a few months later, Vazquez soon reclaimed it. The 2008 trilogy ended in yet another defeat for Marquez.

However, the brutal showdowns, especially those with Marquez, took their toll on his health. Reportedly, he lost vision in his right eye. Just when he was dealing with the issue, reports emerged that he was suffering from an autoimmune disorder that affected the internal organs and skin. At the time, WBC duly stepped in and supported him.

A GoFundMe page has already been created. Fans and followers can make their donations suitably. Additionally, a word of encouragement would go a long way in motivating Israel Vazquez and his family during this difficult time. You may share your thoughts through the comments below.
