For Mike Tyson, his fight against Jake Paul is not only about defying age. It is about showing the world that his boxing acumen isn’t bounded by his years. His trainer, Rafael Cordeiro has outlined the measures the fighter and his camp are taking to ensure that the fight is skewed in his favour.

On July 20, ‘Iron Mike, who will be 58 then, will fight Paul, who will be 3o years younger than him. While age is not in Tyson’s favor, his illness, sciatica, is also something that has kept fans concerned. However, the narrative his team is building is not of an aging, crippled Tyson. But it is their effort to show the world how abled he is, despite all of his shortcomings. On this premise, Cordeiro revealed the strategies they are already employing in the days leading to the clash.

Speaking with Ariel Helwani, the trainer who was in Tyson’s Corner in his last boxing stint, almost four years ago, noted some pertinent details about his latest camp. He remarked, “Mike, he just hit the bags. He hit the mitts, did his strength condition. He has a group of people around him and one of those guys that work with a lot of people around…”

He added, “It’s a great team and we are super excited. It’s a professional team, it’s not something that just like to be entertainment. No, it’s going to be a fight. This is why we truly believe in our area. The way I train Mike to fight is the same way I train my boys to fight.” Calling the 2x heavyweight champion a “a monster,” the trainer further added that they have already begun camp even if the fight is almost four months away.

The fighter is already in shape, and they’re now focussing on conditioning, he noted. The dedication his fighter is showing has allowed the Brazilian coach to assert that “Mike is going to touch Jake.” In it, he sees an inspiration for his younger trainees. “Sometimes I can see Mike see something that can inspire the next generation. The way he see the fight. When he puts his name he knows what to do, he knows what he wants. It’s going be a war man. This is what I believe.”

While the fight will be all about who the stronger boxer is, Team Tyson is also moving forward tactically. They are basing their entire strategy on technique. What are these techniques?

The Panic Route

Adding to his argument, the trainer who’s known to have trained multiple MMA fighters is outlining a tactic that leverages the strengths of ‘Iron Mike’ and the weaknesses of the ‘Problem Child.’

“It’s going to be a very technical match because we have a kid on the other side that can box and isn’t afraid,” he confessed in another interview. However, he issued a warning to the other side, saying, “But Mike has such heavy hands, and it will be impossible not to touch Jake.”

“Panic. He will panic,” Cordeiro remarked, “That’s the goal. Our goal is to keep Jake in panic the entire fight. Or for as long as he can take it.”
