Tyson Fury is touted to be one of the best heavyweight fighters of this era. Today, as he’s asked to prove his worth against another fighter of a similar league, he was reminded of two brothers, who collectively ruled the heavyweight division right before he took to the ring. Despite his previous clash with one of them, Fury did not hesitate to call it a spade when it came to the Klitschko brothers.

Wladimir Klitschko and Vitali Klitschko, popularly known as the Klitschko brothers peaked between the years 2004 and 2015. In that period, they were considered the best of the division, with both of them holding some 40 titles together. They refused to compete against each other, single-handedly taking to the helm of the boxing division. However, in 2013, Vitali retired from the scene and became a politician in his home country, Ukraine. Today, when their downfall was discussed, Fury had only nice things to say about them.

Famous boxing correspondent, Gareth A Davies spoke of Fury’s legacy as a leading boxer of this era. He highlighted how when Fury was picking momentum, the Klitschko brothers started plummeting. Immediately, ‘Gypsy King’ jumped to their defense. He noted, “It did, but what you gotta take your hat off for them is they’re both very wealthy men. And they’re both very accomplished and achieved a lot. And they’re intact. They got no brain damage or nothing, so, I respect that.”

His response is unusual, given his fight against Wladimir Klitschko was one of the toughest of his formative days. In 2015, in a German-based fight, ‘Dr Steelhammer’ Wladimir lost his fight to the then 27-year-old Fury. The on-points loss ended the Ukrainian’s decade-long reign, the second-longest in the heavyweight division. That animosity also found its way very recently when Wladimir, now an inactive fighter sided with Fury’s upcoming opponent, Usyk.

Wladimir Klitschko and Fury jab words again

Ahead of the upcoming May fight between the two heavyweight champions, Klitschko gave some noteworthy advice to his Ukrainian counterpart on how to defeat Fury. To the ‘secret advice’ Usyk got from his close mate Klitschko, Fury retorted to Seconds Out, “That would be very good advice, wouldn’t it? How to lose to the Gypsy King?”

“How can Wlad, my old mate, give anyone advice? He would have used it himself, wouldn’t he, if he had any idea how to beat me?” noted Fury. He added, “It was a one-sided boxing lesson that I gave to old Wlad, and he was a very good champion, just like this guy [Usyk].”

“I said back then that if I can’t beat Wlad I must be useless. Again, I will say it again, ‘If I can’t be Usyk, then I must be no good,” Fury told the attending press. “That’s your headline.” Do you agree with what Fury had to say about the Klitschko brothers?
