In a huge upset, Canelo Alvarez lost to Dmitry Bivol this last Saturday inside the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. From the beginning of the bout, Alvarez struggled to land an effective shot and Bivol made the most he could. The Russian boxer Dmitry Bivol took well advantage of his height and reach against Alvarez. He kept light on his feet, moved around Alvarez, and hit the latter with some thoughtful combos.

During the fifth round of the fight, Bivol even found Alvarez against the ropes. Without wasting one second, he landed some relentless punches on Canelo. Following continuous pressure and a well-thought game-plan, Dmitry Bivol won the fight via decision. Following the end of the fight, Mike Tyson took to Instagram and expressed a breakdown of the event.

Mike Tyson explains why Canelo Alvarez lost against Dmitry Bivol

According to Mike Tyson, Canelo Alvarez was not using his jab effectively during the fight. This resulted in Dmitry Bivol getting more aggressive and brave. In the ‘Kid Dynamite’s opinion, had Alvarez used his jabs effectively and hard, Bivol would not have been able to come in.

“The guy [Dmitry Bivol] was coming in because he wasn’t worried about Canelo’s jab. So, he got more aggressive, and he got brave. If he’s not jabbing, he has no defense.

Tyson further explained the consequences in such cases where one does not effectively use their jab. “If he’s not gonna jab, the guy’s gonna walk right in on him, like he did.” “Next time, use your jab; different fight,” he added.

Tyson then went up to a punching bag and demonstrated exactly how he believed Alvarez should have fought against someone like Dmitry Bivol.

Compared to other punches in boxing, the jab creates the least amount of power. However, it is the most useful punch in a fight, and a good fighter is often associated with an impactful and busy jab. Mike Tyson sounded synonymous and said the following:

“If Canelo would have used the jab I was discussing with my wife. He’s not using his jab and then in the next round, I saw him using his jab, so his corner must have been telling him the same thing.”

“And I believe if he used his jab, it would have been a different fight,” Tyson concluded. Bivol used his size brilliantly and won via decision against Alvarez. Maybe, had Alvarez fought more actively using his jab, it would have been a different fight.
