Mikaela Mayer wins her second bout of the year. It was a well-deserved victory for the 33-year-old, who scored unanimously over the Italian Silvia Bortot. A thorough professional, in her eyes and for the fans, her performance yesterday night might have ticked all the right boxes. But how did she fare before her hugely respected trainer, Al Mitchell? For close to fifteen years, the latter has been honing her skills. Hence, his evaluation does matter.

Mikaela Mayer made her professional debut six years ago. Her Super Featherweight unification attempt failed last year in front of Alycia Baumgardner, resulting in her first career loss. Six months later, she returned with renewed vigor to defeat Lucy Wildheart and become the WBC (Interim) Lightweight champion. However, unlike the last time, the latest match occurred at the agreed weight of 142 pounds.

Silvia Bortot, a former European titleholder, tried her best but couldn’t pull the controls from Mayer’s hands. Though the 38-year-old Italian attempted to make a comeback during the latter half, it was too late. The American boxer outboxed and outmaneuvered her much bigger opponent. The match ended with Silvia Bortot receiving a cut outside one of  her eyes. It was her third career loss.

So, standing alongside Al Mitchell, Mikaela Mayer said, “Hey guys, I hope you enjoyed the fight. Time to hear what Coach Al gave me..”

The latter had in the past trained former Light Middleweight champion and Olympic gold medalist David Reid and former Super Welterweight champion (late), Vernon Forrest, besides a stint on the 1996 U.S. Olympic boxing team. So, without batting an eyelid, the veteran trainer replied, “I give her a B+, a high B, an excellent job she did.”

She lost a closely contested match to Baumgardner, who is reportedly entangled in a doping controversy. With the recent win, Mayer’s record now stands at nineteen wins against one reversal. Yesterday’s bout was the third consecutive match she had in England. Reportedly, she has expressed an interest in facing unified Light Middleweight champion Natasha Jones. If the fight with the Liverpudlian comes about, then, in all probability, she would have to return to England again.
