From his side, Ryan Garcia has attempted to paper over the crack his relationship with Canelo Alvarez had suffered a few years ago. Prompted by the kindness Canelo showed ‘KingRy’ while talking about Garcia during his recent, the fighter publically thanked the Mexican champion for all the guidance he received during his formative years as a professional in the sport.

Ryan Garcia and Canelo Alvarez exchanged a heartfelt set of messages on social media that stemmed from their respect for each other, and their commitment to championing their Mexican heritage. The exchange raised eyebrows as it was one of the rare moments in two years where the two fighters shared any niceties toward each other. So what did they say?

On his Instagram, in his post addressed to Alvarez, the 25-year-old super lightweight invoked his Mexican roots to break the ice with Alvarez. While Garcia’s parents are American by birth, his ancestral roots can be traced back to Mexico. He wrote, “No amount of hate can separate our Mexican Bond 🇲🇽 @canelo…” He added, “Thank you canelo for all the lessons and teachings you gave me. Also thank you to @caneloteam for all the training you helped me with forever grateful and I’m thankful! From the bottom of my soul.”

A proud Mexican, Canelo Alvarez replied gracefully. In comments, the 33-year-old wrote, “Just focus and get that win… you know we love u kid.” Heartened by the response, Garcia commented on Canelo’s response in Spanish: “My big brother! No matter what I’m with you. You taught me a lot. No one can tell me otherwise. I will always respect you.”

The recent interaction between boxing’s leading figures, Canelo and KingRy, is noteworthy. While KingRy faces criticism across the sport for his online behavior, Canelo has offered him support, but without explicitly endorsing or disapproving of his actions. This support is significant on two fronts. Firstly, it comes in the boxing world, where Canelo Alvarez holds immense influence. Secondly, it arrives two years after their public falling out, which disappointed many fans.

What went wrong between Ryan Garcia and Canelo Alvarez?

Garcia used to train alongside Alvarez in the stables of Eddy Reynoso. During that time, the latter was supportive of KingRy, so much so that he made regular appearances in his fights. However, things turned sour in 2022, when KingRy left Reynoso, alleging that the trainer did not give him much attention. Scorned, Canelo rebutted by criticizing the young fighter’s work ethic. 2 years later, they seem to be putting all the water under the bridge.

A few days ago, to a reporter, Canelo expressed his concern for the young fighter. “The only thing I wish right now is that he has people to help him because he needs it – without judging him… I don’t know what’s going on with him, but I hope he has someone,” said Canelo, hoping things get better for Garcia.

Is this a fresh start to their soured relationship? With time, it will be interesting to see how these fighters navigate their bond.
