The year so far has not been that great for the heavyweight division in boxing. With most high-profile bouts clashing, the boxing scene in this belt has been pretty dead for a while. There is only one fight that has gone on to keep the division relevant: Jake Paul’s fight with Tommy Fury. The February clash saw the YouTube boxer lose to Fury, and that went on to grab the most headlines this year. With yet another bout coming up on August 5, ‘Problem Child’ Paul is all set to take on Nate Diaz in Dallas, Texas.

The lower weight section, on the other hand, has stepped up to the occasion and has continuously delivered nail-biting matches to their fans. Exciting bouts like that of Errol Spence vs. Terence Crawford on the 29th of July and Ryan Garcia vs. Gervonta Davis that happened in April this year have kept the weight class in the headlines. However, the heavyweight class has so far not been able to register the hype it once used to demand, and Hearn has now opened up about Paul’s plea about building excitement.

Eddie Hearn responds to Jake Paul’s plea

Earlier in an interview with Talk Sport, Jake ‘Problem Child’ Paul expressed his disappointment over high-profile fights in the heavyweight section falling flat. He further mentioned that the fans are eagerly waiting for the most anticipated fights, but they never come through. Paul made a plea to his contemporaries, like Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Oleksandr Usyk, Deontay Wilder, and Andy Ruiz. He asked them to make their big fights happen and not duck each other. He further argued that they get paid to fight, not spar.

British promoter Eddie Hearn in a recent interview with Talk Sport responded to Paul’s ‘plea’. Refuting the blame on Anthony Joshua, Hearn said, “We live in a world of criticism, don’t we? If you listened to Twitter you’d never really want to get out of bed in the morning.”

Defending AJ against such criticisms, he further added, “When you look at AJ’s CV, I don’t see the criticism. I think he’s always been in those big fights, and he is an occasion. He’s going to make an absolute fortune to fight Deontay Wilder, but he wants to risk it all against Dillian Whyte because he loves the excitement, he loves the thrill.” He also spoke about matches that are yet to come later this year. He mentioned the bout between Oleksandr Usyk and Tommy Fury before he finally takes on Daniel Dubois.
