Cris Cyborg is one of the latest combat sports personalities to come out against the latest rulebook draft by USA Boxing. The federation that is accorded the role of regulating amateur/Olympic boxing in the country announced late Friday that with the onset of 2024, transgender women above the age of 18 who have undergone gender reassignment will be allowed to compete in the women’s category. Joining the herd of voices that are opposing the new development is former UFC fighter, Cris Cyborg.

Although trans men will be allowed to compete in the male category, there has been growing criticism of trans women competing against cisgender women. Their argument centers around the idea that individuals assigned male at birth who transition to female still retain more biological strength than their cisgender counterparts. Cris Cyborg has now brought in an up-and-coming presidential candidate into the ongoing argument.

Taking to her profile, inactive welterweight fighter, Cyborg wrote a plea to rising Republican presidential candidate, Vivek Ramaswamy. Cyborg responded to Michael Benson’s post, which included an excerpt from the transgender policy outlining the guidelines, by stating, “We need to protect women in sports! @VivekGRamaswamy.”

The Indian-American, multimillionaire, Ramaswamy, has on multiple occasions voiced his opinions about the transgender community. At the second GOP debate for the upcoming 2024 presidential elections, Ramaswamy reiterated, “Transgenderism is a mental health disorder. We have to acknowledge the truth of that for what it is. It is not compassionate to affirm a kid’s confusion. That is not compassion. That is cruelty.”

Riley Gaines, who has on multiple occasions opposed the proposition of having transwomen compete against cisgender woman athletes, in a social media post noted, “@USABoxing to allow men who merely say they are women to fight against women. Mark my words, it will take a woman getting killed before these misogynistic fools wake up.” The swimmer has led such campaigns after she lost a national contest against a transgender swimmer, Lia Thomas.  Joining her was tennis champion Martina Navratilova. On her X profile, giving her two cents on the development, she wrote, “So not ok…beyond irresponsible.”

In defense of their new policy, the federation in their rulebook wrote, “Since boxing’s (international federation) has not determined transgender eligibility and boxing is considered a combat sport, USA Boxing’s overriding objective is the safety of all boxers and fair competition between all boxers.” Meanwhile, the WBC has proposed allowing them to compete in a separate category. It is to see how the boxing community adapts and reacts to such developments.
