From the initial rounds, it appeared that Shohjahon Ergashev might finally turn the tables on the powerful reigning champion. However, if anyone had made any, it was an assumption made in haste. The sheer class and power of Subriel Matias soon started revealing themselves.

The two met on the David BenavidezDemetrius Andrade card on November 25. By the fifth round, Matias had pummeled the Uzbek boxer to an extent. Ergashev opted to retire from the bout before the sixth round began. Anyhow, a month later, there seems to be a new twist to the story. Through his Instagram story, Shohjahon Ergashev has shared news. It talks about an incident that took place a few months before the November 25 bout. Seemingly, while in Moscow, he received a stabbing injury in the leg. Most fans might remember that Ergashev reportedly cited an injury to his leg as the reason for pulling out of the fight.

For a boxer who won 20 out of his twenty-three victories through knockout, Shohjahon came with strong credentials. Like Subriel Matias, he started fighting professionally in December 2015. Three years later, he became the WBA (international) super lightweight title holder. But unlike his Puerto Rican opponent, he wasn’t that active off later, having fought his last over a year ago against Angel Martinez Hernandez on August 10.

Regardless, no one can diminish the credit due to Subriel Matias under any circumstances. In three years, it was the fifth time that the IBF light welterweight champion won a bout with the opponent preferring early retirement. The 31-year-old Puerto Rican, who has suffered only one defeat in his eight-year-old career, became a world champion early in February this year. He fought Jeremias Ponce for the vacant IBF light welterweight title and won through the fifth round corner stoppage.
