Carrying three Welterweight titles on his shoulder, Errol Spence Jr. entered the ring with Terence Crawford on July 29th. However, Crawford outclassed ‘The Truth’ and ended the contest in the ninth round. A little over a month after the bout, Spence Jr. reactivated the rematch clause against ‘Bud’.

At this, while the boxing world is busy discussing a potential rematch between Spence Jr. and Crawford at 154 lbs, the father of a two-division champion declared ‘The Truth’ should have never faced ‘Bud’ in the ring. In his opinion, Errol Spence Jr. should have considered hanging his gloves after the major accident in 2019.

In 2019, Errol Spence Jr. had a major car accident when his Ferrari flipped multiple times. Luckily, as he wore no seatbelt, ‘The Truth’ was hurled out of the car and he survived. Only six months after the Ferrari incident, he had an accident with a G-Wagon he was driving. According to Angel Garcia, when Spence Jr. returned to boxing against his son, Danny Garcia, following the Ferrari crash in 2019, ‘The Truth’ took too many of Garcia’s punches in the ring. At this, Angel thought Spence Jr. should not have continued and accepted the fight against ‘Bud’.

If it was me, honest to God, I would never have taken that fight for him. He had come from a big accident. Dan should have beat him but he didn’t. He took a lot of shots from Dan,” Angle Garcia told YSM Sports Media. “I know the fans wanted it because they pay for everything but at the end of the day, you gotta worry about your life. Who’s gonna visit you in the hospital when you f—– up? Nobody. When you die a week later, they sold your sh!t or trashed it,” he added, concerned for Spence Jr.’s well-being.

In this context, it is worth mentioning that even though Angel Garcia felt Errol Spence Jr. should have never fought Terence Crawford, Sugar Ray Leonard recently encouraged ‘The Truth’ for his rematch with ‘Bud’.

I feel combat sport is a representation of life inside a cage or ring. There is fear, struggle, and the will to be free. It has a poetic quality.
