Evander Holyfield’s mother made ‘The Real Deal’ patient for the Mike Tyson fight
By 1990, Holyfield had already beaten Pinklon Thomas, Michael Dokes, and James Tillis, the first person to have gone the distance with ‘Kid Dynamite’. As a result, while Tyson reigned the division, Holyfield became the no. 1 Heavyweight contender who deserved to face Tyson in the ring. At this, on being asked if Tyson was deliberately avoiding Holyfield, ‘The Real Deal’ stated he barely thought about it.
“I didn’t think about it. The point of the matter is that I want to fight for the championship but there are rules and regulations. So, one thing is, my mom says, ‘Son, don’t ever be in a hurry‘,” started Holyfield.
“My mom had these things about how you made yourself a clown. By bragging about yourself because you’re so anxious to do something. But, then you get there and you don’t it,” he continued. By and by, he revealed that following his mother’s words, Holyfield just wanted to “be ready” for when the moment arrived instead of letting it come and “slip away from me.”
Eventually, with his patience, Holyfield got to face Tyson in November 1996 and became the WBA Heavyweight champion. Soon after the first bout, the duo had a rematch in 1997 where Tyson was disqualified. However, in the recent past, Tyson and Holyfield once again became the talk of the town as there was a rumor about a trilogy.
