For a long time, Canelo Alvarez has been compared with Julio Chavez Sr. In fact, before his fight with Julio Chavez Jr., ESPN analysts speculated a “hypothetical matchup” between Alvarez and Chavez Sr. In this connection, ESPN even defined Chavez Sr. as “the most beloved — and probably the best — Mexican warrior to lace on gloves“. Despite weight being an issue and Canelo still not having arrived at his prime, making certain abstract compensations at the time, the ESPN experts went on with the so-called “classic matchup“.
While power was in favor of Alvarez, speed, chin, ring IQ, and defense were all by the side of Chavez Sr. Likewise, all the experts predicted a victory in favor of Chavez Sr. against Alvarez. Following Canelo’s latest victory against John Ryder, Oscar De La Hoya reaffirmed the view of ESPN. Taking to Twitter, the former promoter of Alvarez, De La Hoya declared that none would match Chavez Sr. in boxing.

Oscar De La Hoya rubs salt in the wounds of Canelo Alvarez
Ahead of the fight against John Ryder, Canelo Alvarez declared that all he sought to do was “make history“. However, a number of fans and analysts found Alvarez’s latest performance underwhelming. Although the Mexican fighter snatched a unanimous decision win, John Ryder was able to land a couple of good shots on the Mexican boxer. Meditating on this fight, thus, Oscar De La Hoya said, “Nobody will ever be @Jcchavez115 [the Twitter handle of Julio Chavez Sr.]“.

Anyway, Chavez Sr. himself once declared that Alvarez would not match him. In this connection, it is worth mentioning Alvarez’s statements from an old interview with Michelle Phelps where the former was asked to offer his thoughts on comments made by Chavez Sr. “I really don’t want to be like anybody. I want to make my own story. When this is all over when I retire, the numbers will tell my story,” said Canelo Alvarez.
