It’s still not clear who will finally get a chance to face Canelo Alvarez over the Cinco de Mayo weekend. As the suspense continues without closure, a new twist appears to be gaining traction in the unfolding story. Though still not confirmed, per a few accounts, Canelo Alvarez could be back in the Matchroom stable.

IFL TV shared the news sometime ago through their official X/Twitter handle. Fans might remember. Roughly a year ago, the undisputed super middleweight champion left Eddie Hearn and his team to join Al Haymon‘s PBC under a $100 million three-fight deal. As could be expected, a string of comments from fans and followers has been pouring in.

The IFL tweet read that Canelo Alvarez is purportedly getting back with erstwhile promoter Matchroom Boxing. The objective is to close in on a tentative fight with either Jaime Munguia or Edgar Berlanga. The latter is now Alvarez’s WBA mandatory challenger. “CANELO SET TO RETURN MATCHROOM. It’s being reported that Canelo Alvarez is set for a sensational return to Matchroom to face Jaime Munguia & Edgar Berlanga,” they said.

But the post also mentioned a possible reason. Reportedly, PBC couldn’t get him one of the high-profile fights, viz., with either David Benavidez, Terence Crawford, or Jermall Charlo: “This is due to PBC failing to deliver the David Benavidez, Terence Crawford, or Jermall Charlo fights.

After leaving Oscar De la Hoya‘s Golden Boy Promotions, it was during the 2020 Callum Smith fight that Canelo Alvarez first worked with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing. The partnership proved fruitful, and it saw the Mexican icon through some of the most significant battles of his career. But the relationship had probably run its course by the time of the John Ryder fight in May last year.

Thereafter came the news of the super middleweight king joining the PBC ranks. The Jermell Charlo bout was reportedly the first of the three-fight deal.

A Winning Equation

From the responses that have come so far, most appear happy as they believe in Eddie Hearn’s ability to latch onto the big-money spinners. Take, for instance, this user, who believes that Canelo Alvarez’s return proves beyond doubt that the Matchroom honcho is the best in the business.

However, according to the following user, the development, on the one hand, might see the departure of Conor Benn. However, on the other hand, Alvarez’s readmission could usher in new profit venues for the promotion.

The following user also lauded Eddie Hearn’s talent in securing some of the best deals and fights for his fighters.

In this user’s strong opinion, Canelo Alvarez shouldn’t have left Matchroom at all.

This follower probably couldn’t help but take a dig that Hearn, taking inspiration from Alvarez, may eventually switch over to pajamas.

Given that the needle barely moved in terms of a fight with either Benavidez or Crawford, time is ticking for Canelo Alvarez. He will have to make up his mind soon. If the Matchroom return comes out for real, then fans will hope to see things moving at a faster pace. A fight with Edgar Berlanga may not be that top-notch for many. But a Munguia clash offers all the intrigue and excitement fans look forward to in a big match.
