Shakur Stevenson and Shuichiro Yoshino are only hours away from locking horns inside the ring. Ahead of the fight on April 8th, a close study of the numbers was conducted. While in one instance, Stevenson is found to miss 89% of his jabs, in another, he is discovered to land 75% of his power punches in a single round of the fight!
The study has further revealed how Stevenson comparatively absorbed more punches when against a taller opponent. On the other hand, Yoshino is found to have landed more body punches than Stevenson in boxing. Given the figures, one can easily perceive the technical deficiencies as well as the remarkable accuracies of both fighters in the ring. As we proceed, the numbers that were meditated in the process were offered by CompuBox.

Shakur Stevenson missed 89% of his jabs
Shakur Stevenson threw a total of 282 jabs against Oscar Valdez. However, only 31 of his punches landed on the same. Hence, despite being one and a half inches taller than Valdez, in a single round, Stevenson landed only 11% of his jabs on average. Despite having the same reach as Stevenson, Shuichiro Yoshino is 2 inches taller than his opponent. Thus, one can’t help but ask – how effective would Stevenson be with his jabs if he missed 89% of the same, especially in a bout where he is now the shorter combatant?

Against Jamel Herring, Stevenson demonstrated a better percentage by landing 26.1% of his jabs. Although Steveson exceeded him, being a taller person than both Shakur and Valdez, Herring was able to land at least 16.7% of his jabs which is four times the figure of Valdez (4.1%). Thus, with the increase in the height of his opponent, Stevenson has subsequently absorbed a better percentage of punches. An overall study by CompuBox has even found Yoshino to land 18.1% of his jabs on average. Certainly, the number is slightly better than that exhibited by Stevenson in his recent fights. Going strictly by the numbers, one would say that if Yoshino retains his figure, Stevenson will be in trouble.
In one round Stevenson landed 75% of his power punches!
Getting to work early in the fight, Stevenson deals with an impressive amount of power punches. In his fight against Oscar Valdez, on average, the Newark-born fighter landed 53% of his power punches exceeding Valdez by 24.2%. Quite impressively, in the first round itself, Stevenson landed 57.1% of his power punches. The percentages significantly rose in the 10th, 11th, and 12th rounds of the fight. Unbelievably, the Southpaw fighter scored 75% of his power punches in the 12th round against Valdez. After this bout, he became the unified super featherweight champion.

However, against Herring, Stevenson scored 35.2% of his power punches on average. As per CompuBox, as of now, Stevenson has landed 45.7% power punches on average, which is 8.5% more than that displayed by Yoshino. Although 75% of Yoshino’s victories arrive by knockouts, speaking of power punches, Stevenson, who has been sparring with Terence Crawford, is steps ahead.
Shuichiro Yoshino lands more body punches than Stevenson
Against Herring, out of the 530 punches that Stevenson threw, only 23 landed on the body of his opponent. In short, the 5′ 7″ tall fighter landed 14% of his body punches. However, against Valdez, Stevenson was able to land 32% of his body punches in the ring. According to CompuBox, on average, Stevenson has been able to land 31.1% of his body punches as of now.

In sharp contrast, Yoshino, on the other hand, on average, has landed 40.4% of his power punches. Hence, when it comes to body punches, Yoshino’s percentile is better than Stevenson’s. However, it must be acknowledged that Stevenson has exceeded Yoshino in various cases. With the figures now given, who do you think has a better chance to win on the 8th of April?
