On Saturday night, at New York’s Hulu Theater, Alycia Baumgardner not only retained her WBC, WBO, IBF, and IBO Super Featherweight title, she won the vacant WBA title as well. For the twenty-eight-year-old ‘The Bomb,’ it’s the eighth straight victory after her 2018 loss to the Greek Christina Linardatou. The new undisputed champion of the world started her professional journey nearly four years ago with a technical win over Britain Hart in Ohio. The Detroit, Michigan, resident’s record stands at an impressive fourteen wins, half of which were knockouts, per BoxRec.

During the interview, when asked, “What did you think of your performance in this fight?” Baumgardner replied, “It was great, you know, I dug deep; listen, I started my period today, so that should tell you, yes, all right, yeah, that should tell you that us women can do it all, so yes, sir.” More than a million have viewed the clip, and the post received over a thousand retweets.

Numerous supporters chimed in to express their emotions and perspective

Understanding Baumgardner’s struggle all too well, @Inmyworld202 tried a bit of explaining. They said that the beginning of a woman’s menstrual cycle can be challenging. The symptoms of pain, fatigue, and flushing are just the beginning. It’s common to experience sudden, intense pain.

@mattastrid mentioned that he wouldn’t dare to confront Baumgardner after getting to know her. His wife’s presence in the house boosts confidence, making him feel like he could run at Usain Bolt‘s speed. She (his wife) knows how to keep him in check!

@PRIMEDAD1 mentioned that it’s not pleasant to acknowledge; it’s a reality that impacts our abilities. Fighting for or during a championship was extremely tough at that time. It’s a challenging feat!

Baumgardner’s statement had @Amy_Spangler highly intrigued. According to her, the fact that most of the criticism came from men speaks volumes. She also highlighted the ladies who took the time to respond with negativity.

@Matturation mentioned Alycia’s unpredictable personality aside, the current state of men’s boxing is much lamentable. Accordingly, every male boxer knows that one loss can cast doubt on the rest of their career. But, simultaneously, women’s boxing is picking up as they happen without hang-ups or fuss.

@NFitandfab, while admiring Baumgardner, mentioned that she’s the best! She continued that she(Baumgardner) had to push herself even more. Understandably, she was exhausted, especially when her mental state was probably not 100%. This meant that she (Baumgardner) needed to keep her mind clear and her momentum high. @NFitandfab found Baumgardner incredible!

@_KEMD_ found Baumgardner a fantastic individual and a magnificent representation of women being the ‘ultimate warriors.’

It goes without saying that women boxers face challenges when fighting during their periods, including physical discomfort and potential bleeding. However, many still choose to train and compete, showing their strength and determination. Therefore with proper support and access to menstrual products, women can effectively fight during their periods.

It’s essential to break the stigma surrounding menstrual cycles and to acknowledge that women can still perform at a high level during this time.
