With the last two losses against Devin Haney, Paulie Malignaggi thinks it’s time George Kambosos Jr. hangs his gloves. However, Kambosos, whose spirit in the sport suggests otherwise, has voiced his resilience to continue. His medium to communicate this message? A scathing response to Malignaggi.

After defeating Teofimo Lopez in a 2021 fight, ambitious Kambosos took his fight against the then-WBC Lightweight champion, Devin Haney. The latter in all his technical suave defeated the Sydney-based fighter, emerging as the undisputed champion of the division. In a redo match four months later, Haney followed suit, still holding onto his undisputed status. While he lost those high-profile bouts, Kambosos managed to bag some hefty cheques and another win against Maxi Hughes in 2023. While Malignaggi thinks Kambosos’ next fight too will bring riches to the fighter, he also thinks the fight won’t be a nice reflection on his otherwise perfect record.

Another Hefty Check

The ‘Ferocious’ will level up against Vasyl Lomachenko for the vacant IBF world title. While the news got everyone excited, Malignaggi, who last fought in 2017 as a welterweight, also chimed in outlining how he thinks Kambosos would not fair well against Loma. In response came a fuming Kambosos, who spared no words.

To Pro Box TV, Paulie ‘Magic Man’ had noted, “I feel like he should retire after this fight.” He continued, “He’s been able to set himself up financially in these fights. Credit to him for being able to maximize a win so well like he was able to in the Lopez fight.”

On X, responding to the report on Malignaggi’s interview, Kambosos Jr noted, “And I believe you haven’t been relevant since 2013! When AB [Adrien Broner] took your girl & belt. You’ve been beaten up by mma fighters in bare knuckle & sparring, & kicked out of events since [laughing emoji] You believe your own bullshit, got 1 thing right though “Kambosos depositing another hefty check.”

The Devin Haney fights proved to be very lucrative for Kambosos. It was reported that for their first fight, he earned a staggering $10 million. While his opponent took home a significantly lower purse split in a bid to get the fight rolling, the world watched how Kambosos got an impressive deal. While it is plausible that Loma’s fight too would bring such cheques into his kitty, the fight represents a larger picture.

George Kambosos Jr. vs. Vasyl Lomachenko

Originally set for a confrontation in 2022, Loma pulled out of the fight in light of the Russian invasion of his home country. While he aided Ukraine in the defense effort, Kambosos Jr. went ahead to fight Devin Haney. Now that Loma has resumed his activity in the sport, and also fought Haney last year, his impending fight against the Australian Number 1 lightweight is back on track.
