Seven years ago, one of boxing’s greatest accomplished a memorable feat. Andre Ward, who had been a unified super middleweight champion, took over as a unified light heavyweight champion on November 19, 2016. Unfortunately, the fight is remembered for an entirely different reason. Though “Son of God” won the fight unanimously, many felt that his opponent, Sergey Kovalev, was the rightful winner. A feeling of bitterness engulfed the fight, which entered the almanac of notoriety.

Somehow, as it appears, a little of that feeling has traveled down the road to this day. Considering yesterday it celebrated its seventh anniversary, a clip of the fight started gaining traction on social media. It didn’t take time for award-winning boxing writer Dan Rafael to share his views. The protagonist of the story, as expected, soon became aware of the development. Without wasting a minute, he joined the fray, pouring his heart out.

Shooting back at Rafael, Andre Ward wrote that the boxing writer, over the years, made false assumptions about numerous people, including him, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Bernard Hopkins. He added further, “You have a certain type that you like. Lol. Your “type” always gets beat when they face us. Deal with it. Have a good rest of your night, buddy.” It appears that the post has now been deleted.

@DiariosJournals had initially shared a clip of the 2016 match under its #OnThisDay catalog. The tweet read, “#OnThisDay in 2016: André Ward defeated Sergey Kovalev by UD12 to win the WBA, IBF, & WBO light heavyweight titles. S.O.G. becomes a two-division champion.” Dan Rafael soon added, “The night Kovalev got robbed.” It would be self-deceptive to think André Ward would have left it as it is. Instead, it stirred up the undefeated former champion.

So after his second super middleweight title defense on November 16, 2013, Ward stayed out of the ring for close to nineteen months. He fought a non-title bout against Briton Paul Smith on June 20, 2015, and moved to the light heavyweight division. Seventeen months later, he fought his first title-unification fight against the Russian Kovalev.

An unbelievable outcome

The Russian light heavyweight knocked down Ward in the second round. More so, according to the CompuBox data, Kovalev was the most active of the two boxers. Nearly 126 of the 474 punches he threw made contact with the American boxer. The latter, incidentally, could manage to land only 116 of his 337 punches. Eventually, when the dust settled, to everyone’s utter shock, all three judges awarded Andre Ward a unanimous victory with a ditto score of 114-113. The decision received widespread criticism across the board. Though there were a few who felt that, despite initial hiccups, Andre Ward had settled in the fight to gain a well-deserved victory.
