Last year, his first attempt at Light Heavyweight gold paid no dividend to Canelo Alvarez. But a victory over Gennady Golovkin during their trilogy fight established his mettle in the division. The boxer has lost just two bouts so far in his career. He seems to have recovered from injuries and is staging a return in May against Briton John Ryder in his hometown Guadalajara. The latter, a WBO Interim Super Middleweight title holder, appears apt to Canelo and his promoter, Matchroom Sports’ Eddie Hearn.

However, many openly voiced disapproval. Canelo has, in the past, fought highly-skilled opponents such as Gennady Golovkin, Caleb Plant, and Dmitry Bivol. Hence given the existing line-up available in the 168 lbs. division, quite a few feel and opine that he should continue the track and fight another big name.

As expected, the objections haven’t gone well with Canelo. Yesterday, during an interview, Fight Hub TV‘s reporter Marcos Viegas asked Oscar De La Hoya, “Canelo announced his fight against John Ryder; just your thoughts overall of the matchup when you think about it.”

‘The Golden Boy’ replied that they were happy that Canelo was finally fighting in front of a home crowd. His opponent, however, remains debatable. “….but you know, in terms of um, in terms of opposition, you know, uh, I I’m not sure exactly what direction he wants to go. You know, it’s like it seems like he’s regressing, inside the ring. He’s regressing in terms of picking opponents, and you know he’s fighting all these British Fighters, and like, it does nothing to his legacy….

Eddie Hearn claps back with his fiery response to Oscar De La Hoya

The Mexican champion’s promoter Eddie Hearn didn’t seem to take the views lightly and launched a counterpunch. talkSPORT‘s Michael Benson shared excerpts of his comments through Twitter today.

Fight Hub’s Marcos Viegas returned to extract Hearn’s views on De La Hoya’s opinions. He asked, “Eddie, I know you guys have gotten a little bit of flack uh from this. What do you make of the criticism from the fans about this opponent?

Hearn clarified that this is a mandatory title defense for Canelo, and John Ryder has earned his sport as the primary challenger. Then broaching De La Hoya’s comments, he said that the undisputed champ has had big fights in the recent past. Hence at times, many fail to accept this. However, though this may not be a big-hype fight, it’s still a ‘good fight.’

When Viegas repeated De La Hoya’s statement, Hearn responded, “Oscar will say whatever suits him. I don’t think half the time he knows what he’s saying, but he will never speak honestly….”

Hearn then added that perhaps ‘The Golden Boy’ still rues that Canelo left his Golden Boy Promotions. “I think he needs to look at some of his own matchmakings, particularly Zerdo Ramirez this weekend and particularly Jaime Munguia, which has been absolutely horrific and embarrassing,” he further stated.
