After Tyson Fury defeated Francis Ngannou via split decision, several individuals questioned the judges who scored the bout in Fury’s favor. As per them, besides a knockdown, the mixed martial artist had done enough in the ring to have carried the day. In fact, Ngannou himself took to X and demanded Fury thank the judges who helped ‘The Gypsy King’ win.

While people branded Fury’s victory against the mixed martial artist a controversial win, a former world champion recently justified the decision of Ngannou vs. Fury. As per him, although Ngannou impressed the spectators, ‘The Gypsy King’ won the majority of the rounds. Well, here is what he said.

In the wake of Fury vs. Ngannou, former WBA Welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi critically analyzed the fight. And while he gave Ngannou his due credit, Malignaggi felt ‘The Gypsy King’ won all the quiet rounds. In his opinion, even though Fury threw too many wide punches and missed, he won the contest with his jab. And while Ngannou exhibited impressive footwork and quickness, Malignaggi believes he did not conquer more than three or four rounds:

I don’t think he won more than three rounds. Maybe four rounds if you are a little bit generous,” Fury said. “But, he won the bigger rounds and Fury won all the quiet rounds. But you still have to score the quiet rounds,” he added. In this connection, Malignaggi also explained where Ngannou went wrong in that fight.

Paulie Malignaggi holds Ngannou’s inconsistency accountable

According to Malignaggi, although the French-Cameroonian fighter, ranked 591 by BoxRec, was quick and powerful, he was not consistent with the way he fought. As per Malignaggi, this is exactly where Fury capitalized with his long jabs. “Where he went wrong is the inconsistency. There were too many rounds where he did absolutely nothing. And he allowed Fury to just win them with a simple jab,” said Malignaggi on Paulie TV.

As per him, although Ngannou won the big rounds with some combinations, he kind of gave away the last rounds to ‘The Gypsy King.’ “But it was like he shot his last load in that one. Then in nine and ten, he did absolutely nothing,” added Paulie. “I think he went for the knockout in round eight, he wanted a big finish,” Malignaggi concluded.

Well, frankly speaking, there is an immense sense that Malignaggi’s analysis carries. Certainly, Ngannou fought well for a mixed martial artist who is making his boxing debut. However, Fury, the more experienced boxer displayed enough skill and command to have won the fight. Anyway, what do you make of Malignaggi’s analysis?
