Joe Rogan, in the latest episode of JRE, recounted Buster Douglas defeating Mike Tyson on February 11, 1990. With his guest Dave Portnoy, Rogan reflected upon Douglas’ “super-talented” abilities inside the boxing ring. Although none believed in Douglas’ chances against the ‘Kid Dynamite’, Douglas defeated Tyson via a KO in the 10th round of their fight in 1990. Contrary to conspiracy theories that spoke about Douglas receiving a long count in the 8th round as went down in the ring, Rogan credited the victory to Douglas’ abilities.

Rogan revealed that Douglas’ mother had died before the fight and this unfortunate incident somehow subsequently contributed to Douglas’ victory over Tyson in the ring. “Remember when Buster Douglas fought Mike Tyson? Nobody believed he had a goddamn chance. But Buster Douglas’ mother died before that fight. Tyson’s life had fallen apart. Buster Douglas was always super f*cking talented,” Rogan commented by saying. In doing so, he rejected the theories that attached favouritism to Douglas’ victory.

According to Rogan, there were two distinct elements that contributed to Tyson’s shocking defeat. On one hand, he highlighted Tyson’s troubled life, and on the other, he stressed Douglas being sorrowful for having lost his mother ahead of the fight in 1990.

The analyst-cum-commentator believed that Douglas possessed great talent when it came to boxing. However, Douglas, lacking commitment did not go all the way in. According to Rogan, by the time Tyson squared off with Douglas in the ring, Tyson’s life had fallen apart, and the remorseful Douglas conquered his win.

“It wasn’t just that, you know. Mike Tyson’s life had fallen apart [and] Buster Douglas was a bad man! He just didn’t commit himself to boxing like he could have. Like, many super-talented people, he just didn’t go all in,” Rogan added by saying. Defeating Mike Tyson in 1990, Douglas became the WBA, WBC, and IBF World Heavyweight champion in pro boxing. The same year, only after eight months, Douglas squared off against Evander Holyfield and lost all the titles he won by defeating Tyson in the ring.
