Over the past few weeks, there have been talks of a new team joining Formula One, called Panther Team Asia. Now, rumour has it that Panthera may not be the only team interested in a 2021 entry.

According to sources, a Spanish Formula One team, along the lines of Campos Racing, could join Formula One. The project points to the 2021 season under a new budget limit regulation. Renault and Honda have reportedly been contacted to explore engine supplier options for engines, along with technology and other components. There is support from the Spanish federation for the ambitious project.

As it turns out, team owners Adrian Campos and Salvatore Gandolfo have been tantalised by F1’s major rules overhaul in 2021. With a budget cap in place, they believe that they can enter a Spanish Formula One team.

Financial backing for the project is expected to come from the Monaco Increase Management company. This company was founded by Gandolfo and it named former Ferrari, Arrows and Super Aguri senior team member Daniele Audetto as an advisor.

This is not the first time Campos has been mentioned in the same breath as Formula One. His last tryst with the sport was in 2010, courtesy the Hispania Racing Team (HRT) when he sold Campos Racing before its F1 debut in 2010.

MIM claims to have held meetings with F1 chiefs Chase Carey and Ross Brawn, regarding entry. Meanwhile, according to Gandolfo, the project has “the financial solidity required by the FIA to make this project a success”.

Back in August, Brawn admitted that there was a “surprising” amount of interest from potential new teams. The only solid bid up until that point was Panthera Team Asia, though they may have to wait until at least 2022.

Gandolfo confessed that the “long-term project” is “aware of the big challenges ahead of us”.

It is said that former F1 aerodynamicist Ben Wood and ex-Super Aguri chief designer Peter McCool have been recruited to the project already.

McCool has been hired as technical director and Wood is slated to be chief aerodynamicist, a role he held while working alongside McCool at Super Aguri and then performed for Brawn and Mercedes before leaving after the 2010 season.
