Jalen Rose was always extremely close to the only parent in his life, his mother Jeanne. While he may have lost Jeanne, he still remembers every moment spent with her. Following the same, he gave a heartwarming speech at the NBA Legends Brunch during the All-Star Weekend, owing it all to his mother. He also reminisced about the promise he made to her as a fourth grader with aspiring dreams.
He said, “You guys know life hits different when you’re born without your father’s name.” Rose then reminisced about his promise to his mother. “I’ll never forget saying to my mother, ‘I’m gonna make it to the league I promise. Imma be Dr. J. I promise.’ And I started writing that on my school papers. Every time. Fourth grade, fifth grade.” Choking, he added, “And now, Dr. J knows my name. He knows who I am. He has a grandson named Jalen. My mother created that name.”
He painted a beautifully tragic picture about the time he made that promise saying, “I just remembered late ’70s sitting in the back of my mother’s Chrysler Cordoba. She was working in the day at Chrysler and then working at the Shake Bowl Lounge in Detroit and I was in the back seat of the car. I moved the mat and I could see the ground. And it was like the Flintstones.”

However, even in the sentimental moment, Jalen did not forget to mention the people who stood with him through thick and thin. He also gave a special thanks to his Godfather and the former Detroit Pistons‘ No. 21– Dave Bing, “Thank you very much Dave for your love, your support, and always being there in my life.”
Undeniably, Jalen Rose gives everyone a lesson to achieve dreams. And today, he stands as an example of how to make full use of your opportunities.
