Winning the NBA championship against your rival is one thing. But partying in your rival’s city after defeating them is just adding insult to injury. The Dallas Mavericks in 2011 beat the Miami Heat for the NBA championship. Dwyane Wade was properly upset about losing the final. Then he got to know that Mavs were celebrating in LIV Club at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, which made him more upset.
Shawn Marion, who won his only championship with the Mavs in 2011, recalled the encounter, on a special live episode of the Hennessy Arena Tour in Dallas with the Club 520 Podcast. Marion also represented Miami during the 2008-09 season. He explains how it was a special feeling winning the first championship and that too against rivals in Miami.

He explains that the feeling was LIT. During that time the club LIV was booming and especially on Sundays. The entire team turned up and created the atmosphere in the club. “Bought that big a** uh uh over extra Magnum or whatever that $100,000 bottle whatever like had two people pouring the bottle pouring.” Marion said the feeling was like, “it was just like Dallas took over Miami that night.”

The LIV Club was owned by David Grutman. He was also a long-time friend of the Heat’s Wade. So Wade got upset about how his friend could betray him and call his rivals to celebrate. Another reason was Wade himself was unhappy, and also couldn’t handle losing the final. He recalls on his The Why With Dwyane Wade show, that he was also upset with his teammates.
“I started calling people on my team and tried to see if they were having a good time cuz I wasn’t. And I didn’t want anybody to have fun,” said Wade. He continued how he was ready to fire at his teammates if they were seen at LIV. “I was ready to fire people for no reason, just if they were celebrating at LIV.”

Thankfully, there were no Miami players, otherwise it would have just added fuel to the fiery situation. It was also a big moment for Marion and Mavs to celebrate as no matter how they performed, nobody would consider them as a contender throughout the season.
