Since its release in 2020, the Sony PlayStation 5 has sold close to 36 million units all over the world. With more and more highly demanding games coming out every week, console players have had to struggle with storage space forever.

Now aiming to eradicate the matter, the tech tycoon has collaborated with manufacturer WD to announce a new line of solid-state drives (SSD), the SN850P. Post announcement, the gaming community was baffled to learn the high price tag that comes with the next-gen SSDs. The new SSDs are an overhauled model of the previous SN850 variant.

Next-gen SSD variants, specs and prices for PlayStation 5

In a recent tweet, WD reveals its next generation of console-compatible SSDs that promise to improve the speed performances of the iconic PlayStation gaming consoles. The WD_BLACK SN850P NVMe SSD is an accessory product developed by an official collaboration between Sony and Western Digital and offers a significant speed boost compared to its predecessor.

The gaming community was left startled on learning the price of the new SSDs, which seems to be higher than the retail price of Sony’s flagship console itself. The SN850P also offers a higher storage space than its previous edition with a 4TB storage capacity compared to only up to 2TB for the SN850 variant. Western Digital claims the new generation of SSDs will feature a redesigned heatsink that makes the accessory “optimized specifically for the PS5“.

Despite its potential to make the PlayStation reclaim much of the gaming console market, fans cannot get over its high prices ($550 for the 4TB variant). Even though PS SSDs often see radical price cuts to stay in the competition the pricing of the newly announced SN850P seems to have ticked off a few fans globally.

Many console players consider the move to be ridiculous, especially when the console itself is priced much lower than its accessory. Even the 1TB variant of the SN850P is significantly costlier ($149) than a 1TB SN850 1TB model (available for as low as $79). Community members suggest that waiting for a price slash may be the smarter move unless any immediate storage expansion is in the books.

SSD costing more than the console: Is it worth the price?

PlayStation is one of the most sought-after gaming consoles available right now and fans consider a price cut of the product will help Sony to generate higher sales revenues. For the casual console enjoyer, it looks like they have to shell out the extra dough for the PS5 imprint on the new SSDs.

The open storage expansion system of the PlayStation consoles remains one of its focus features that are likely to lead to the new SSDs at lower prices in the coming months. However, the performance of the SN850P just needs to be above the rest to make it cut the best console SSD list anytime soon.
