At the end of the 2018 Formula One season, Fernando Alonso walked away from Formula One. There was even a guard of honour, courtesy Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, and the three of them performing donuts in Abu Dhabi. Now, rumours have emerged that the Spaniard could return to Formula One.
One thing is for sure, if he does return, it will not be with McLaren, as he has already parted ways with them. Many in F1 miss Fernando Alonso, including Lewis Hamilton’s father, Anthony Hamilton.
In fact, he said “Personally, Fernando retired too soon, although I understand why he left,” he revealed to Spanish broadcaster Movistar. “If he returned it would be fantastic. We need someone like him in this sport again.”

Unfortunately, a lot of doors have slammed shut, especially among the top 3 teams. Ferrari and Honda have already washed their hands off Alonso. Meanwhile, Mercedes will not be keen for a repeat of 2007 when Fernando Alonso partnered Hamilton.

Realistically speaking, Alonso’s best chance could be with a midfield team and trying and bring them back to the top. For example, Renault could be a good option, as they were the next best team after the Big 3 teams. There is also the fact that Fernando Alonso won both his championships with Renault. Racing with the likes of Haas, Williams or Alfa Romeo, is highly unlikely. However, Alfa Romeo are being lifted up by veteran driver Kimi Raikkonen.
Having a partnership between Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen would also be a dream come true for a number of F1 fans. Both drivers are highly experienced and their inputs will be highly valuable for a team’s development.
However, on the other end of the fence, even if there is no place for him in the racing part of the sport, he could come back as part of the team personnel.
