Every popular game has a significant community that supports the developers and their efforts to improve the game. But the community also has a dark side which can show up sometimes, and go against the same developers that are working hard on the title. It can be toxic, and spiteful, and definitely unnecessary as well. Recently, the developers of the popular MMORPG title Destiny 2, faced the same issue with its fans.
A developer recently lashed out on Twitter because of all the harassment the team at Bungie receives all the time. Various players and the game’s community manager stepped in to support him. But this issue has caused a spotlight on the toxicity that players and developers of the title has faced over the past few years.

Destiny 2 developer berates community for the harassment they face
Recently, Bungie developer Kevin Yanes who works on the Sandbox tweeted about the issues they have faced recently. He ranted about fans asking the developers to be more transparent about the game’s development. However, he hated that most players bad-mouthed them, and criticized the decisions they have taken for the betterment of Destiny 2. Along with that, he stated that they create memes and spread toxicity in the community.
I would like to see more open conversations on Twitter from the devs to the community. Not just a "we'll pass this feedback along."

This issue came into light after the slingshot grenade launcher meme surfaced on the internet. The meme joked about the statements Yades made in a podcast about the Grenade Launcher being a slingshot weapon. A lot of fans disagreed with his stance, which shouldn’t be a problem. But, things became ugly quickly with a lot of negative comments which aren’t acceptable.

Bungie’s Senior Community Manager Dylan “dmg04” Gafner replied affirmatively to Hush’s response. He noted that toxic fans replied negatively at their attempts to create a direct conversation with insults on platforms like Twitter. Gafner later mentioned them fans will go after the developers for one statement they make in a long conversation.
The 3hr interview with Firing Range was a great convo. Point in the initial tweet is that even with a meaty conversation, people still latch on to a single statement and proceed to meme/throw insults.
We'll continue to push for transparency. Just sucks when this happens.

But, fans should make sure that they don’t be toxic against these hard working developers, and support them to create the best possible game.
