Details of 2020 Australian Open Revealed

According to French publication, Le Temps. Some interesting details on the early 2020 tennis calendar were revealed. As expected, the ATP Cup will take place from 3 to 12 January featuring 24 teams. There will be five players per team, held in three cities and the final in Sydney. But the big news is regarding the Australian Open.

The news is that the Australian Open will start one week later than previous years: on January 20, and it will end in early February. ‘It (ATP Cup) will last ten days, then a one-week break, then the Open from 20 January’, said the Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley.

‘We want to extend our time of expansion. February is the Super Bowl month in the United States, January has to be the tennis month in Australia.’ Tennis Australia features among Laver Cup investors.

The event took place in Chicago last year and in Prague two years ago. Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are confirmed for 2019. ‘We produce images and we sell the rights. The first year we lost money, but in the second we already got it back.

In Geneva, it will be great!’, added Tiley. Tiley also said an interesting thing: ‘I was criticized a lot by people who say that there are too many team competitions. I think that if tennis grows, it’s good for everyone.

In golf, there are even more and it’s good for the game! Tennis authorities should not right each other, but fighting together against other sports.’ Tiley commented on his relationship with Federer’s family that already started a lot of years ago.

‘In my younger years, I shared a room in London with Peter Carter, the first Roger Federer’s coach’, said Tiley. ‘I have a lot of respect for Roger and his family, but when I meet Robbie [Robert Federer, his father], we speak about South Africa, not tennis.’
