The recent defeat of Serena Williams in the semis of US Open 2020 left spectators astonished. After totally dominating the first set, winning it by 6-1, the fortress of the World no. 8 was breached by Victoria Azarenka. Azarenka was defeated by Williams in 2 US Open finals before but this time she had some other plans. She fought ferociously and made a comeback to enter into the finals of US Open 2020.
The 23-time Grand Slam winner has not won a Grand Slam in nearly 4 years now. When some experts argue that it is too early to draw conclusions about her fitness or question her gameplay, the former World No.1 and Swedish Legendary player Mats Wilander has a different point of view.
“Serena hates to lose, wants to keep playing because she enjoys the competition and life.”-stated the 7-time Grand Slam winner in the beginning.

“Is she choking because she wants to win a 24th title? Or is she just not good enough any more? That’s the big question. Personally, I just don’t think she’s quite good enough anymore.”-said Wilander.

“Serena Williams isn’t as good as she used to be!”
“I think the depth of the women’s game has taken the confidence out of someone like Serena who is used to winning easily. When it does get close, she then seems to play her worst tennis.”-told the Swedish.

“Serena isn’t as good as she used to be, and the rest of the field is better and they all feel they can beat her. The locker room now realizes that they have a chance against her. She’s still very good, just not great anymore.”-added the former World no.1.

What actually stunned many fans was that how could a great player like Serena lose after winning the first set 6-1. Did she really choke? Did Victoria win the game or Williams give it away? Both fans and experts did have a huge expectation. They only increase when someone is on the verge of lifting a 24th Grand Slam.
“Serena could have well won this match, she was leading. I think she just needs to keep plugging away. She might get one but the younger players seem to be getting better and better and going away from her a little bit. I think she knows she’s the best ever and I think she just wants to win again.”-summarized Wilander.

Indirectly, there were some indications about the ‘age’ factor. They are natural too. One simply can’t forget that there is a player playing who is just not a mother but who is about to be 39 this September. Yet, fans expect more and more. These expectations are evident enough to know why Serena Williams is such a big name.
